Job Summary

The City of Starkville is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Firefighter to join our team. As a Firefighter, you will play a critical role in protecting the lives and property of our citizens.

Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to emergency calls and extinguish fires in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Provide emergency medical services, including first aid and patient transport.
  • Participate in training activities and instruction sessions to maintain and improve skills.
  • Inspect and maintain equipment and apparatus to ensure readiness for emergency situations.
  • Perform public information and education tasks to promote fire safety and prevention.
  • Enter inspection, training, and emergency call data into records management systems.
  • Work in a safe manner and report any unsafe conditions or activities.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • No felony record.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and follow orders.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed.
Working Conditions

The Firefighter will work in a variety of environments, including all types of weather and temperature conditions. The employee will be required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear for long periods. The employee will also be required to use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and to reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation.

Physical Demands

The Firefighter will be required to perform frequent bending, stooping, squatting, and climbing. The employee will also be required to stand, sit, reach at and above shoulder height, kneel, balance above ground, push and pull, crawl, twist at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck, and lifting of objects weighing up to 75 pounds. The employee will also be required to have vision sufficient to read computer screens, printed documents, equipment dials and gauges, color vision acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will also be required to have hearing sufficient to hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
