Key Responsibilities
  • Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fires in a timely and effective manner.

  • Keep fire stations, equipment, and grounds in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Participate in public information and education tasks, including entering inspection and training data into records management systems.
  • Perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • Work in a safe manner, reporting unsafe activity and conditions to superiors.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or state-recognized equivalent.
  • Valid driver's license with a good driving record.
  • No felony convictions.
  • Ability to work in a team environment under stressful situations.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to understand and apply available guidelines to varied operational requirements.
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under time-sensitive deadlines.
Additional Requirements
  1. Candidates must pass a timed general knowledge test with a score of 70% or better.
  2. Candidates must complete a 1.5-mile run within 14 minutes or less.
  3. Candidates must pass the Starkville Fire Department Physical Agility Test.
  4. Candidates must pass an interview with the Assessment Board.
Working Conditions

Firefighters work in a variety of environments, including all types of weather and temperature conditions. They must be able to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear for long periods. They must also be able to use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms. Firefighters must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and travel to other locations using various modes of private and commercial transportation.
