Firefighter

The City of Starkville is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Firefighter to join our team. As a Firefighter, you will be responsible for responding to emergency situations, protecting life and property, and maintaining equipment.

• Respond to fire alarms and extinguish fires
• Provide emergency medical services and render first aid
• Clean and inspect equipment and apparatus
• Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks
• Participate in training activities and instruction sessions
• Acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the City
• Perform various public information or education tasks
• Enter inspection, training, and emergency service calls into records management systems

• High school diploma or state-recognized equivalent
• Valid driver's license with a good driving record
• No felony record
• Ability to work in a team environment under stressful situations
• Ability to read, comprehend, and follow instructions
• Ability to perform a wide variety of duties with accuracy and speed

The Firefighter will work in a variety of weather and temperature conditions, including extreme heat and cold. The employee will be required to walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear for long periods. The employee will also be required to use hands to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls, and to reach with hands and arms.

The Firefighter will be required to frequently bend, stoop, squat, and climb. The employee will also be required to stand, sit, reach at and above shoulder height, kneel, balance above ground, push and pull, crawl, twist at waist, upward and downward flexion of neck, side-to-side turning of neck, and lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.

1. Candidates must pass a background and criminal check
2. Candidates must complete a timed general knowledge test
3. Candidates must complete a 1.5-mile run within 14 minutes or less
4. Candidates must complete the Starkville Fire Department Physical Agility Test
5. Candidates must participate in an interview with the Assessment Board
