Key Responsibilities

The registered nurse (RN) is responsible for coordinating nursing care, which includes direct patient interaction, education for patients and families, and managing transitions of care. The RN upholds professional nursing standards across various settings and throughout the continuum of care to address the needs of patients and their families. Operating within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model, the RN is accountable for planning, executing, assessing, and communicating all aspects of nursing care for assigned patients. The ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice serves as the foundation for the RN's practice. The RN also demonstrates leadership through roles such as preceptor, informal leadership positions, and initiatives aimed at quality improvement. Patient care is delegated based on skill level, experience, patient acuity, fiscal responsibility, and resource availability. The RN must possess strong communication skills, be adept at mentoring and teaching, and may participate in committees or projects. Some roles may require the use of a personal vehicle as part of job responsibilities.

Qualifications

Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Registered nurses with an associate degree starting on or after April 1, 2020, are required to provide proof of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing within five years from their start date.

Registered nurses with an associate degree starting before April 1, 2020, must provide proof of completion of a baccalaureate degree in nursing as per the degree requirement program in effect at the time of hire.

Preferred qualifications include one year of RN experience in a relevant care setting or one year of LPN experience at Mayo Clinic.

Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential. Experience in a collaborative team environment is necessary. Proficiency in computer skills is required, with prior experience in electronic medical record systems being advantageous. Flexibility in working hours is expected, which may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call shifts. The ability to adapt to unpredictable situations in the workplace is crucial. Demonstrated leadership capabilities, effective communication, and strong critical thinking skills are also required.

A current RN license in accordance with state regulations is mandatory. In Arizona and Florida, maintaining Basic Life Support (BLS) competency is required. In the Midwest, current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers certification from recognized programs such as the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is necessary. Positions not located on campus may not require current BLS competency as determined by the work area.

Additional state licensure and/or specialty certifications may be required based on the specific work area.
