Position Overview
The LIGO Laboratory, part of Caltech, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Operations Coordinator to enhance its team. This role is crucial for the operational success of the observatory.
Job Responsibilities
As an Operations Coordinator, you will:
- Report directly to the LHO Operations Team Leader.
- Oversee the operation of a large-scale gravitational-wave interferometer, ensuring optimal performance and data accuracy through vigilant monitoring and adjustments.
- Coordinate and evaluate interferometer activities to maintain operational integrity.
- Assist in the assembly, installation, and testing of Advanced LIGO components, including optics and electronic systems.
- Create and refine Python scripts for automated management of the interferometer and its subsystems.
- Conduct maintenance, calibration, and upgrades of various instrumentation at the observatory.
- Engage in the characterization of instrumental signatures in data and contribute to the development of operational techniques.
- Participate in educational outreach activities, providing insights into detector science and astrophysical research.
- Collaborate with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, and students to achieve operational goals.
- Commit to safety training and promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in physical sciences or engineering, or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of two years of experience in developing or operating scientific instrumentation.
- Proficiency in standard computing applications.
- Strong skills in high-level programming languages, particularly Python and Bash.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
