Job Summary:

The Wichita Public Schools is seeking a Para Educator - Special Education Low Incidence to support students with special needs in a classroom setting. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of a certified teacher to provide instructional assistance, organization, and management of student behavior, classroom safety, and communication with students, support staff, and parents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist students in class settings as directed by the teacher or other staff
  • Manage classroom routines and procedures
  • Redirect behavior, assess crisis situations, and intervene to defuse situations
  • Supervise school activities on or off campus during the instructional day
  • Implement student behavior plans
  • Assist students to and from assigned areas within the building
  • Set up the classroom for group instruction, projects, and activities
  • Integrate technology into the classroom
  • Use a slate and/or stylus or have a willingness to learn these skills
  • Assist students with low vision equipment and adaptive magnifying equipment
  • Participate in effective teaming skills, collaboration, conflict resolution, and communication
  • Provide individual and/or group instruction
  • Assist with student engagement with the curriculum
  • Evaluate student progress on work assignments and share information with the teacher
  • Assist with scoring tests, keeping records, and making reports
  • Demonstrate knowledge of district resources
  • Prepare instructional materials and/or learning centers
  • Assist with planning for the Individual Education Plan (IEP)
  • Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information
  • Model appropriate behavior for students
  • Develop and maintain a professional rapport with the classroom teacher and other staff
  • Communicate with students, parents, instructional, and support staff
  • Observe and chart student behavior and assist in discipline as instructed by the teacher
  • Prioritize and organize tasks
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, PLCs, and parent conferences
  • Acquire in-service training annually
  • Assist students to and from buses and assist drivers until departure time
  • Assist in the transportation of students
  • Care for students' medical needs under the direct supervision of the school nurse or other appropriate professional
  • Assist students with basic needs, including self-care, hygiene, feeding, toileting, diapering, dressing, and physical transfers
  • Exhibit manual dexterity, physical ability, and stamina for a full day of physical activity

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
  • 48 accredited college credits verifiable with a transcript or pass a state-approved assessment required for Title School Paras
  • Pass the Physical Capacity Test (PCP)
  • Requires in-service, training, or coursework in first aid, symptoms of child abuse, and/or symptoms and signs of illness
  • Requires knowledge and literacy of various sign language modalities, Braille, NCI (Nonviolent Crisis Intervention), and/or other special skills
