This is a part-time day job opportunity at Samuel E Spaght Science and Communications Magnet Elementary School in Wichita, Kansas.

Job Summary:

The ESOL Newcomer Paraeducator will assist in delivering educational programs to elementary, middle, or high school students who are English language learners. The role involves supporting the classroom teacher in providing academic assistance, communication, and understanding between the school, families, and community.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist students with lessons under the direct supervision of the classroom teacher.
  • Help students reinforce concepts for individuals or small groups.
  • Work with teachers to modify activities to meet individual students' needs and develop academic language.
  • Perform formal and informal assessment activities after training by ESOL or district staff.
  • Assist teachers in monitoring, collecting data, and maintaining records regarding student performance and progress.
  • Assist in maintaining learning areas and instructional materials.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Paras working in a Title School must have a minimum of 48 accredited college credits verifiable with a transcript or pass a state-approved assessment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency and literacy skills in another language (for jobs defined as bilingual only).
Work Environment:

This position requires the ability to work in various weather conditions and may involve supervision of students at the start or end of the school day, at recess, and at buses.

Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Must be able to walk long distances, stand for long periods, sit for long periods, and climb steps.
  • Must be able to sit with students at small tables and chairs and on occasion on the floor.
  • Be able to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of various philosophies and theories of education.
  • Knowledge and skills in working within a multidisciplinary context.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and written to communicate with others inside and outside of the organization.
  • Ability to perform as an effective team player.
  • Ability to plan, organize, make decisions, and prioritize work to meet the daily demands of the building.
Interrelations:
  • Contact with personnel within the district and with customers and vendors.
  • Will be working under the direct supervision of the department supervisor to complete day-to-day tasks.
  • Will be working with a diverse population requiring the ability to handle all situations with tact and diplomacy.
