Job Overview

Under general oversight, assumes full responsibility for planning and delivering direct professional nursing care for designated patients throughout their entire service delivery episode as defined by the patient population and unit. Provides nursing services to patients and families in alignment with the standards of practice for professional nursing, Connecticut Children's policies and procedures, regulatory bodies, and state and federal laws. Reports directly to the Nurse Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • CLINICAL PRACTICE - Consistently demonstrates clinical proficiency and employs the nursing process to ensure safe and appropriate patient care for a defined population in accordance with Connecticut Children's policies and standards.
  • POPULATION SPECIFIC - Exhibits understanding of the unique needs of patients across various age groups from neonates to adolescents, applying this knowledge in practice. Shows cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients and families.
  • UNIT LEADERSHIP - Assigns duties and responsibilities related to patient care to clinical staff based on hospital policy and their professional scope. Contributes to unit leadership by serving as a Resource Nurse and engaging in the professional development of peers through mentorship and preceptorship. Aids in enhancing the unit's productivity and resource management.
  • DOCUMENTATION/COMMUNICATION - Ensures timely completion of all required documentation in accordance with Connecticut Children's policies and standards; effectively communicates essential information to all members of the healthcare team.
  • PATIENT/FAMILY PARTNERSHIP & EDUCATION - Collaborates with patients and families to assess outcomes. Monitors and evaluates patient and family responses to treatment. Provides comprehensive education to patients and families regarding all aspects of care in line with Connecticut Children's policies and standards, supporting the organization's commitment to patient and family education.
  • CONNECTICUT CHILDREN'S STANDARDS - Demonstrates alignment with the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors that reflect Connecticut Children's Standards.
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Minimum of ASN/ADN required upon hire, with a preference for BSN. If hired with ASN/ADN, must obtain BSN within three years.
  • Preferred minimum of two years of experience in pediatric and/or medical/surgical nursing.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Connecticut required and must be maintained.
  • Healthcare Provider CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross required upon hire and must be maintained.
  • CPI Certification required within 90 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of:
  • Theory, principles, techniques, and practices of professional nursing.
  • State regulations governing nursing practice.
  • Clinical standards of care, documentation, and patient record policies.
  • Teaching methods, identification of learning needs, and provision of patient/family education.
  • Developmental and population-specific assessment techniques and their application in practice.
  • Accreditation and certification standards.
Skills:
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse community.
  • Basic proficiency in using personal computers in a networked healthcare environment to access relevant software applications, manage files, and utilize the Internet for research.
Ability to:
  • Work independently or collaboratively within teams and/or other organizations in the medical and research community.
  • Make informed clinical and procedural decisions using the nursing process.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately to ancillary staff.
  • Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, both orally and in writing.
