Under general oversight, takes on 24-hour responsibility to strategize and deliver direct professional nursing care for designated patients throughout their entire service delivery period as defined by patient population and unit specifications. Provides nursing services to patients and their families in alignment with the standards of practice for professional nursing, Connecticut Children's policies and procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations. Reports directly to the Nurse Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- CLINICAL PRACTICE - Consistently demonstrates clinical proficiency and employs the nursing process to ensure safe and suitable patient care for a defined patient demographic, adhering to Connecticut Children's and unit policies and standards.
- POPULATION SPECIFIC - Exhibits understanding of the unique needs of patients across various age groups from neonate to adolescence, applying this knowledge in practice. Shows cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients and families.
- UNIT LEADERSHIP - Assigns duties and responsibilities related to patient care to clinical staff in accordance with hospital policy and their scope of practice. As assigned, contributes to unit leadership by serving as a Resource Nurse and/or engaging in the professional development of others through mentorship and preceptorship activities. Supports the productivity and resource management efforts of the unit/department.
- DOCUMENTATION/COMMUNICATION - Completes all necessary documentation promptly, in accordance with Connecticut Children's policies and standards; ensures effective communication of essential information to all members of the healthcare team.
- PATIENT/FAMILY PARTNERSHIP & EDUCATION - Collaborates with patients and families to assess outcomes. Monitors, analyzes, and evaluates patient/family responses to treatment. Provides relevant education to patients and families regarding all aspects of care in line with Connecticut Children's policies and standards; supports organizational initiatives in patient/family education.
- CONNECTICUT CHILDREN'S STANDARDS - Demonstrates alignment with the mission, values, and goals of the organization through behaviors that reflect Connecticut Children's Standards.
Education and Experience:
- A minimum of ASN/ADN required upon hire, with a preference for BSN. If hired with ASN/ADN, must obtain BSN within three years.
- Preferred minimum of two years of experience in pediatric and/or medical/surgical nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Connecticut is required and must be maintained.
- Healthcare Provider CPR/BLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required upon hire and must be maintained.
- CPI Certification is required within 90 days of hire.
Knowledge of:
- Theory, principles, techniques, and practices of professional nursing.
- State regulations governing nursing practice.
- Clinical standards of care; documentation and patient record policies and standards.
- Teaching methodologies; identification of learning needs and provision of patient/family education.
- Developmental and population-specific assessment techniques and their application in practice.
- Accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals and groups.
- Basic proficiency in the use of personal computers in a networked, Windows-based healthcare environment to access relevant software applications; locate, open, edit, and print files and information utilized by the unit; and utilize the Internet as a research tool.
- Work independently or collaboratively within teams and/or other organizations in the medical and research community.
- Make clinical and procedural decisions using the nursing process.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Delegate tasks appropriately to ancillary staff.
- Communicate effectively with individuals and groups, both orally and in writing.
