About the Department:

The Division for Enrollment Management collaborates with the George Mason University community to enhance student recruitment and retention. This is achieved through the development and execution of strategic enrollment initiatives, oversight of the admissions process, provision of financial aid services, and management of the Mason Student Services Center, which serves as a centralized resource for student services.

Our activities are designed to support institutional enrollment objectives by prioritizing the student (and family) experience, fostering a culture of transparency, and utilizing data to guide decision-making.

The Office of Admissions plays a crucial role in recruiting and enrolling freshmen, transfer, graduate, and non-degree students in alignment with the University's strategic goals, ensuring a diverse and successful student body that contributes to the institution's excellence and global impact.


About the Position:

The Veteran and Dependent Benefits Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the utilization of state and federal educational benefits for prospective, incoming, and current students.

This role involves performing administrative and technical tasks to enhance the Virginia Military Survivors and Dependents program.

The Coordinator engages with military-connected populations attending Virginia Community College System (VCCS) campuses, providing support and transition assistance to students seeking pathways and transfer opportunities to George Mason University.

Additionally, this position assists with the daily operations of the Office of Military Services, fostering relationships and collaboration across campus to ensure a positive experience for military-connected and veteran populations.


Responsibilities:
1. Oversee daily operations of the Virginia Military Survivors & Dependents Education Program (VMSDEP) portal;
2. Implement program protocols and ensure compliance with State Code, the Virginia Department of Veteran Services, and the State Council for Higher Education in Virginia;
3. Maintain databases and coordinate with partner offices to ensure timely processing of waivers and adjustments to financial aid awards in accordance with federal policies;
4. Utilize email and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools to respond promptly to VMSDEP and Veterans Affairs education benefits inquiries in collaboration with the Mason Student Services Center (MSSC);
5. Assist current students with benefit-related issues and seek resolutions through collaboration with various campus offices;
6. Organize cross-campus workgroups as necessary to enhance policies and procedures related to the VMSDEP program;
7. Support persistence, retention, and graduation efforts for VMSDEP students;
8. Actively counsel and recruit freshmen, transfer, and graduate students utilizing VMSDEP and Department of Veteran Services education programs by providing comprehensive education and benefits counseling;
9. Conduct presentations that showcase George Mason University and educational support services for military-connected students;
10. Develop partnerships with veterans and community organizations to bolster recruitment efforts through outreach methods, including workshops and events;
11. Establish and maintain relationships at military installations and community colleges, scheduling meetings and engaging in follow-up activities with prospective students and applicants intending to use VMSDEP and Department of Veterans Affairs education benefits;
12. Maintain annual training requirements as a School Certifying Official for the Department of Veterans Affairs;
13. Actively participate in Admissions events as needed.

Required Qualifications:
1. Associate's degree in a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience;
2. Customer service experience;
3. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
4. Ability to quickly learn procedures and train others;
5. Proficient with technology and capable of learning new systems.

Preferred Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in a related field;
2. Prior military experience;
3. Experience with Enrollment Manager and the VMSDEP portal;
4. Experience in higher education with knowledge of military and VA programs;
5. Familiarity with student records and information systems;
6. Knowledge of admissions programs;
7. Understanding of VMSDEP and Department of Veterans Affairs educational benefits;
8. Familiarity with information technology systems used by the Department of Veterans Affairs, service branches, and institutions of higher learning.
