This position is for a Laboratory Science Specialist focusing on casual call work within a healthcare laboratory environment.

Employees will receive a competitive shift differential for hours worked in specific locations. Shifts are primarily during the day, with occasional night shifts.

Position Overview:
The Laboratory Science Specialist is responsible for the maintenance, calibration, and quality assurance across various clinical laboratory environments. This role involves conducting analyses on blood and other bodily fluids, reviewing and interpreting data from quality control and patient testing. Collaboration with clinical staff is essential to ensure the accurate ordering, collection, labeling, and testing of laboratory specimens. Additionally, this position may involve training new staff and students.

As a potential Team Lead, the Specialist will oversee the evaluation of quality control data, calibration results, and maintenance records within their designated department.

It is vital to provide exceptional customer service to healthcare providers, patients, and colleagues.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or equivalent qualifications for Montana Licensure (if licensed before 2010).
Montana Licensure (Clinical Laboratory Scientist) is required. Preferred qualifications include certification as a Clinical Lab Scientist or Medical Technologist (ASCP or equivalent).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Calibrate and operate automated laboratory equipment, performing manual tests according to established protocols.
  • Stain and interpret blood smears and other biological specimens.
  • Conduct laboratory tests across various departments on a rotational basis.
  • Enter, validate, and approve results while managing data within the Laboratory Information System.
  • Monitor results, quality control, and instrument conditions, investigating any anomalies.
  • Troubleshoot and repair laboratory instruments, assist in developing new procedures, and provide orientation and training.
  • Prepare reagents and controls as necessary.
  • If serving as Team Lead, ensure proper calibration and operation of instruments while performing manual testing according to established procedures.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Demonstrates sound judgment, patience, and maintains a professional demeanor consistently. Capable of thriving in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential. Exercises tact, discretion, and sensitivity while maintaining confidentiality. Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office and EMR systems. Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize tasks while meeting multiple deadlines. Self-directed with a strong attention to detail, capable of completing assignments accurately and thoroughly with minimal oversight. Advanced mathematical skills are necessary for collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting complex data.
