Position Overview:

The role focuses on pioneering research and development efforts related to high-temperature single-crystal materials designed for commercial applications in laser technology, scintillation, and quantum information science. We seek a hands-on engineer who is a collaborative team member, equipped with extensive technical and managerial expertise in material science and manufacturing processes. The environment is characterized by sophisticated, high-tech systems operating in a low-volume, high-mix production setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Enhance existing crystal growth methodologies to boost material performance, increase production efficiency, and minimize costs.
  • Lead the innovation of next-generation large bulk single crystal materials for laser, scintillation, and quantum information science applications.
  • Design, execute, and oversee experiments, guiding engineers and technicians in experimental procedures. Analyze results and communicate findings to management and teams for multiple projects weekly.
  • Assist the production team in optimizing and resolving issues with current product lines.
  • Prepare reports and engage in customer discussions, effectively presenting findings and relevant data.
  • Maintain essential inventory and ensure that laboratory spaces are organized and clean.
  • Participate in advanced training initiatives to enhance product and technology knowledge, sharing insights with the team and junior staff.
  • May involve additional support tasks, including report compilation and indirect responsibilities (safety, IT, IP, etc.).

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Physics, Solid-State Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Materials Science, or a Master's degree with relevant experience in bulk oxide crystal growth is strongly preferred; a Bachelor's degree with applicable work experience is required.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in high-temperature oxide crystal growth, with a preference for Czochralski growth expertise.
  • Experience in rare-earth spectroscopy and mass spectrometry is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment such as furnaces, ovens, programmable controllers, and materials characterization tools.
  • Knowledge of solid-state synthesis and wet chemistry is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Proactive, energetic, and self-motivated individual.
  • Effective communicator and team player, capable of engaging with customers.
  • Ability to work independently to drive experimentation and testing initiatives.
  • Proficient in drafting clear and concise technical proposals and project reports.
  • Focus on achieving project objectives and timelines.
  • Ability to compile and share data across the organization.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting and resolving scientific and project-related challenges.
  • Experience in leading teams to meet project goals.
  • Conduct laboratory analysis using testing equipment.
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally, with an expectation of 10% travel.
