Job Summary

The Smithsonian Institution is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Museum Specialist to serve as a Supervisory role in the Collections and Personnel Management unit. This position will assist the Chief of Collections and Personnel in overseeing the care and management of the National Collections, as well as supervising a team of museum technicians and specialists.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement work schedules and assign tasks to team members based on project requirements and individual skills.
  • Review and approve personnel actions, including promotions, reassignments, performance plans, and disciplinary actions.
  • Provide guidance and counsel to subordinates on work skills, training, efficiency, and leave scheduling.
  • Supervise the movement of historically significant artifacts from storage for restoration, preservation, study, or exhibit.
  • Design and construct or supervise the design and construction of cradles, dollies, and other supports for safe handling and movement of artifacts.
Requirements
  • Experience supervising staff, interns, volunteers, and contractors in a museum environment.
  • Experience handling aeronautical and space artifacts, including moving and storing aircraft, aircraft engines, satellites, and spacecraft.
  • Experience packing and crating artifacts for transportation, considering their fragility, size, and material composition.
