POSITION OVERVIEW

The role of the Certified Parent Support Specialist (CPSS) is to offer genuine and focused assistance to parents or primary caregivers of children facing emotional, physical, behavioral, or mental health challenges. The CPSS's primary commitment is to the well-being of the parent or caregiver.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver meaningful and targeted support to parents and primary caregivers in their recovery journey.
  • Assist parents and caregivers in reaching their personal objectives.
  • Engage in purposeful support activities that enhance the strengths and resilience of the parent or caregiver.
  • Collaborate with internal agency staff and community organizations to provide comprehensive support to families in need.

CORE COMPETENCIES

  1. Demonstrated commitment to supporting parents or caregivers of children with emotional, physical, behavioral, or mental health issues.
  2. Completion of required certifications and training as mandated by the Department of Mental Health.
  3. Ability to understand and uphold program standards.
  4. Proficient verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Capacity to interact respectfully and sensitively with children and families.
  6. Ability to work collaboratively within the organization to meet consumer needs.
  7. Knowledgeable in cultural diversity and adept at working with families facing multiple challenges.
  8. Competent in using computer applications effectively.

  • Introduce oneself to the parent or caregiver and clarify the role of the CPSS.
  • Establish peer-based connections through strategic self-disclosure that resonates with the parent's experiences.

  • Exhibit active listening, empathetic responses, and validation of the parent's experiences.
  • Utilize person-first and strength-based language in all communications.

Facilitating Growth:

  • Create an environment that empowers parents to make informed decisions for their families.
  • Assess the appropriateness of support and follow through with various support activities.
  • Encourage understanding and appreciation of the parent's perspective.
  • Support the parent's interests and preferences actively.

Fostering Empowerment:

  • Ensure that parents feel empowered and confident in their decision-making abilities.
  • Identify and highlight the functional strengths in the parent's narrative and share them with the family and team.
  • Respect the parent's decisions and communicate acceptance, even in disagreement.
  • Manage personal biases to maintain a supportive relationship.

Maintaining Respect:

  • Communicate that the parent's voice is valued and deserves attention.
  • Utilize the parent's strengths and cultural background to create personalized support plans.
  • Exhibit cultural humility when engaging with each parent.
  • Identify unmet needs to foster understanding.
  • Encourage parents to reflect on their journeys and promote empowerment.
  • Model respect and acceptance in all interactions.

Collaboration and Problem Solving:

  • Build partnerships with others through a non-adversarial advocacy approach.
  • Participate in team meetings as necessary.
  • Connect parents with peers who share similar experiences to reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Utilize a strength-based approach and collaborative problem-solving techniques.
  • Recognize and leverage the strengths of collaborative partners.

Addressing Bias:

  • Use personal experiences strategically to help others suspend biases about parents.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  5. Collaborate effectively with paraprofessionals and professional staff.

  8. Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records.
  9. Attend required meetings and training sessions.
  10. Safeguard the rights and well-being of consumers.
  11. Exhibit ethical behavior consistently.
  12. Maintain a positive attitude towards work responsibilities.
  13. Address consumer concerns appropriately.
  14. Provide necessary data as required.
  15. Stay informed about organizational updates and respond accordingly.
  16. Complete tasks independently and accurately.
  17. Support compliance with organizational standards and training requirements.
  18. Maintain confidentiality regarding consumer and organizational matters.
  19. Adhere to attendance and punctuality policies.
  20. Comply with health and safety standards.
  21. Document billable time and service reports accurately.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  2. Must be at least 21 years old.
  3. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  4. Must be a parent or primary caregiver with lived experience raising a child with relevant needs.
  5. Completion of all required training within specified timeframes.
  6. Valid driver's license and good driving record.
  7. Proficient in reading, writing, and comprehending English.
