Position Overview:

Role Summary:

The Apple Services Engineering division is at the forefront of integrating artistry with technology, driving innovation across platforms.

This team is responsible for the infrastructure behind the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books, delivering exceptional experiences to a global audience in over 35 languages across more than 150 countries.

Our engineers are tasked with creating secure, comprehensive solutions that encompass custom software for processing creative content, tools for media delivery, server-side systems, and APIs for various Apple services.

With Apple's distinctive synergy of hardware, software, and services, our engineers collaborate to realize a unified vision that emphasizes our commitment to privacy, a fundamental principle at Apple.

Despite the expanding role of services within Apple's business, our teams maintain a small, agile, and cross-functional structure, providing ample opportunities for professional growth.

The Core Services team within Apple Services Engineering (ASE) is on the lookout for an engineering manager to guide a team dedicated to developing scalable and innovative features that enhance the experience for millions of users globally across platforms such as App Store, Apple Arcade, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Books, Podcasts, MusicKit, and iTunes.

In this role, you will collaborate on the online content system that delivers catalog metadata and editorial data, essential for powering our services, and the indexing processes that integrate entities into this system.

Your responsibilities will include discovering inventive methods to merge various technologies, pushing the limits of the CAP theorem, and evaluating performance through median, 95th, and 99th percentiles.

Additionally, you will engage cross-functionally to identify the content metadata necessary for upcoming features and model these entities within our online content framework.

We will also develop a data transformation platform utilizing Spark to supply our catalog metadata to internal teams like Shazam and Siri, as well as external partners, enhancing our services on third-party platforms.

Working with external partners, you will ascertain their requirements and propose tailored solutions to meet their needs.

As a team leader, you will establish a vision and roadmap for the team, collaborate with experts to devise solutions and architectures, and implement project plans to realize these objectives.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in leading and developing a team, including recruitment and performance management.
  • Ability to provide hands-on technical leadership, including mentoring and motivating engineers.
  • Experience in managing complex engineering projects from conception to deployment.
  • Exceptional communication skills, capable of articulating complex ideas and forming persuasive arguments.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, product managers, designers, and partners.
  • Enjoys engaging in deep technical and product discussions, with a keen attention to detail and the ability to switch contexts across multiple projects.
  • Ability to envision the big picture, set a strategic vision, and grow the team and platform accordingly.
  • Hands-on experience with scalable web services and features that span multiple functional teams.
  • Strong analytical skills coupled with a deep understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience with Big Data technologies such as Spark and the Hadoop ecosystem.
  • Familiarity with NoSQL data stores like Solr, Elastic Search, Redis, Memcached, Cassandra, and Voldemort.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with Java; familiarity with other JVM or functional languages like Clojure is advantageous.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience.

Compensation and Benefits:
At Apple, base pay is one component of our comprehensive compensation package, determined within a specified range. This structure allows for progression as you grow and develop within your role.

The base pay range for this position is between $181,000 and $313,000, influenced by your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.

Apple employees have the opportunity to become shareholders through participation in discretionary employee stock programs, including eligibility for restricted stock unit awards and the option to purchase Apple stock at a discount through the Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
