Job Location: Fairbanks, Alaska Dates of Employment: May 1 - October 1, 2024 Position Duties: This is an entry level position that will provide seasonal field sampling and administrative support to meet the diverse needs of the company. We expect the Technician to quickly learn established protocols and grow, becoming familiar with field materials, procedures, and be physically able to meet project field sampling needs. Primary field sampling projects will involve fish and fish habitat sampling in various remote locations across Alaska. Duties may include but are not limited to: Traveling into the field with a crew to support biological and hydrological investigations, including fish capture and tagging, and water quality data collection Supporting field studies programs including pre-field season training and logistical preparations for field efforts Field sampling and daily QA/QC reviews of all data collected Understanding field sampling protocols, authorizations needed to conduct sampling, and the regulatory environment that drives the scientific and data needs of the project Carrying up to approximately 50 lbs. of gear and equipment in steep or rough terrain Working in streams and lakes of varying temperatures in a wide range of weather conditions from hot (more than 85 F) to cold (below freezing). Working in windy, rainy, snowy and buggy conditions is common. Working out of 12- to 15-foot inflatable boats Operating out of helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft to access field sites Working out of remote personnel camps for periods of 2 to 8 weeks at a time and with small teams for extended periods Supporting staff with requested project or administrative needs such as data entry Working with senior staff to become familiar with their projects and needs Supporting health and safety reporting and an overall culture of safety Managing equipment, supplies, and inventory General office support: Ordering supplies, equipment maintenance, and assisting with answering emails and phone calls This position requires employees to be in proximity to firearms and bear spray and will require firearms training for wildlife protection. Position Qualifications and Skills: Educational or field experience in Fisheries, Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, Resource Management, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline. Desired skills include: a strong background in field sampling and outdoor experience, data analysis, proficiency in mathematics, conducting research, familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Access, skill at working in small teams, strong written and verbal communication, problem solving abilities, and attention to detail. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Designation: This position is a non-exempt position paid on an hourly basis and overtime pay is applicable. Overtime must be approved by supervisor. Travel Requirements: This position will have travel requirements to remote Alaska sites, or other Owl Ridge office locations. Essential Functions: You must be willing and able to travel on small single engine aircraft, helicopters, boats, snow machines, ATVs and be able to hike to some field sampl ng locations. You may occasionally be required to work outside of Alaska for field projects or to travel to work with staff in Anchorage or out of State offices. You must be physically capable of working in remote Alaska in a safe manner. This includes performance in, and adaptation to, frequently changing weather conditions. You must be able to walk in rough terrain while carrying the necessary equipment to perform the assigned duties. Due to the cost and complexities of travel to remote areas, you may be required to work in the field for extended periods of time, typically not more than 14 continuous days. This includes research and work on weekends and holidays. Compensation: Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and position.
