General Description

The part-time Program Officer will be a member of the Grants Team at the Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF), will report to the Director of Grants, and will be responsible for managing several aspects of assigned TAJF grantees and specific grant programs.

The Program Officer will be responsible for grants program administration including: research, proposal review, and development of grant recommendations; insuring assigned grantee compliance with funding requirements; tracking and monitoring grant data; and periodic collaboration with funders and legal aid providers.

Primary Functions

1. Manages two to three grant programs;
2. Responsible for an assigned portfolio of grants; which includes monitoring grant activities, providing technical assistance, and reviewing and assessing grantees' compliance, performance and impact;
3. Conducts site visits of grantees or new applicants, prepares reports on grantee performance, and drafts proposal analysis (including written summaries and recommendations) for review by the grants team and action by TAJF;
4. Responds to inquiries regarding TAJF's grant-making guidelines, assesses applications and requests for proposals, consults with nonprofit organizations regarding funding, ensures TAJF guidelines are followed, and provides assistance to grant seeker and grant recipient organizations;
5. Oversees detailed tracking and monitoring of grants, with timely attention to programmatic and expenditure data reports, internal tracking systems and calendars, and reviews statistical information regarding grant-making activity.

Position Requirements

JD, licensed in Texas and a minimum of 3 years of practicing law required. Minimum of 1½ years working in a legal aid/pro bono program or nonprofit providing free legal aid required. Must be able to work 20-30 hours per week in the office. Must be able to occasionally travel throughout the state. Passion for racial, social and economic justice. Experience preferred in one of the following areas of law: housing, public benefits, consumer, employment, juvenile, immigration, health, environmental or family law. Strong interpersonal skills; flexible and team-oriented. Strong written and oral communication skills. Nonprofit legal aid management experience desirable. Some familiarity in board governance issues desirable.
