The Phoenix Suns are seeking a dynamic and experienced Performance Dietitian to join our Health & Performance Department. This pivotal role will optimize the nutritional care and well-being of our athletes. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with players, coaching staff, and the Health & Performance staff to enhance athletic performance and overall health through optimal nutrition strategies.

What You Will Do:

Work under the guidance of the Senior Director of High Performance to:

  • Nutritional Counseling: Assess athletes' diets, injury history, body composition, and energy balance for performance and health optimization. Offer personalized nutrition guidance for training, competition, recovery, injury management, and travel. Recommend appropriate supplementation and support athletes in achieving and maintaining optimal body mass, fat percentage, bone density, and muscle mass for basketball performance. Develop and implement hydration protocols.
  • Support Culinary Operations: Assist in menu development with nutritionally tailored recommendations to enhance athletic performance and health. Design personalized meal and snack plans addressing specific needs such as food allergies, bone health, gastrointestinal issues, and iron deficiencies. Educate food service staff on nutrition and manage supplement budgets.
  • Supplementation: Evaluate nutritional supplements for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy; oversee their appropriate use. Coordinate ordering, stock management, and budgeting for supplements.
  • Multidisciplinary approach: Counsel athletes on nutrition for recovery from illness or injury. Collaborate on nutritional care within multidisciplinary sports medical and sports science teams.
  • Documentation & Education: Maintain electronic records of nutritional assessments and counseling. Develop player educational materials, such as grocery store tours and cooking classes. Document nutrition services and evaluate effectiveness using the Nutrition Care Process. Stay current with sports performance and nutrition trends through ongoing professional development.
  • Collaboration: Work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-performance services to athletes and coaches. Partner with Health & Performance staff to develop and implement assessment protocols and monitoring systems. Collaborate with leadership on future initiatives and departmental planning
What We Need From Our Performance Dietitian, Phoenix Suns:

The Performance Dietician must exhibit strong leadership skills and have consistent track record of commanding and building relationships with high-level athletes in a professional team environment.
  • Experience with athlete performance nutrition testing and appropriate protocols including but not limited to DXA, MX3, height & body weight measurements and blood panel testing.
  • Experience utilizing athlete management and sports science analysis software.
  • Knowledge of rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies: e.g., NBA, USADA, WADA, regarding banned drugs and restricted substances.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of nutrition, including interviewing and education techniques, especially as it pertains to Sports and Basketball performance.
  • A consistent track record of outstanding communication skills with coaches, athletes, other staff, and administrators, with the ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities and a team player and a proven ability to work effectively as part of the Health & Performance Team.
  • Availability for a high volume of non-traditional work hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel.


Experience/ Education Requirements:
  • Registered dietitian with bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutrition required (master’s degree in exercise physiology or nutrition preferred).
  • Certification/Licensure as required by state of practice. Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD).
  • Completion of a didactic program in dietetics and supervised practice program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in sports/performance nutrition.
