About the Team

The Social Innovation team is committed to addressing pressing environmental and social challenges through innovative solutions and collaborative efforts. We conduct thorough research and engage deeply with experts to identify and support promising initiatives that drive meaningful change.

About the Position

We are seeking a passionate and solutions-driven Associate Director to lead projects within our Gun Violence Prevention Initiative. This role requires a combination of strong research and writing abilities, operational management expertise, and a collaborative spirit. The Associate Director will play a key role in shaping our approach to gun violence prevention, providing thought leadership, and managing impactful projects.

Responsibilities
  • Project Management: Lead and manage gun violence prevention projects, including client engagements, thought leadership publications, stakeholder relations, and event planning.
  • Peer Learning Community: Foster a vibrant peer-learning community focused on human safety, thriving communities, and social innovation.
  • Strategic Liaison: Engage with business council members and external advisors to coordinate and enhance gun violence prevention strategies.
  • Independent Research: Conduct in-depth research autonomously, developing actionable insights to inform our initiatives.
  • Content Development: Create high-quality, client-ready written materials and presentations that communicate our findings and strategies effectively.
  • Operational Coordination: Oversee project systems, serving as the liaison for internal functions such as Communications and Accounting to ensure seamless operations.
  • External Representation: Represent the Institute at industry events and throughout the due diligence process, enhancing our visibility and partnerships.
  • Communications Strategy: Contribute to outreach efforts aimed at building awareness of funding opportunities and resources within the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
  • Social Impact Toolkit Development: Assist in expanding our social impact toolkits and roadmaps, focusing on innovative philanthropy strategies and investment decision-making tools.
Qualifications
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in social innovation, public policy, or related fields.
  • Graduate degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
  • Proven expertise in research, writing, facilitation, and public presentation.
  • Strong intellectual capacity with a demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new concepts in social innovation.
  • Exceptional collaborative skills, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment while being self-motivated.
  • Familiarity with the global funding landscape for violence intervention, particularly philanthropic support for historically marginalized communities.
  • An entrepreneurial, action-oriented mindset, characterized by flexibility and a commitment to continuous growth.

Working Conditions & Travel Requirements

This position will work in a professional office environment in Washington, DC. This person will also be required to travel occasionally to other offices and/or venues to assist with events as needed, requiring occasional work outside of traditional hours. International along with domestic travel is possible. Additionally, this position requires interacting virtually on a regular basis with Milken Institute staff based in other locations in the United States and around the world.

This position will work a hybrid schedule consisting of three (3) days per week reporting in-person to your respective office location (Tuesday – Thursday), with the remaining two (2) days working remotely. Please understand, this schedule is subject to change in the Institute’s sole discretion.
