Description

With strong leadership, critical thinking, and communications skills in accounting, finance, and general administration, The Association's Vice President and Chief Financial Officer is responsible for managing the financial operations of the organization-ensuring the organization's financial health, sustainability, and growth of mission support. This role oversees all financial reporting, accounting, budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and compliance requirements. The Vice President and Chief Financial Officer manages and directs The Association's accounting, information technology, information systems, print and mail services, and internal audit teams as well as providing oversight of investing of all endowment and short-term funds.

DUTIES

Manages all financial operations of the organization:

  • Develops and monitors the creation and implementation of long-range financial plans in conjunction with the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
  • Provides executive-level assistance and counsel to the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer.
  • Collaborates with the executive leadership team on the development and execution of organization-wide business strategies, plans, and procedures, including promoting and strengthening culture, engagement, and fundraising at The Association.
  • Works collaboratively with the executive leadership team to prepare and monitor annual operating budgets, including working specifically with the Department of Human Resources to develop and monitor compensation budgets.
  • Develops, monitors, and maintains The Association's internal financial-management policies and procedures, performance measures, and dashboards.
  • Establishes and maintains procedures and controls over revenues and expenditures in all Association departments.
  • Evaluates Association activities and proposes strategies to improve the cost-effectiveness of all Association programs.
  • Prepares the annual financial report and monthly and quarterly financial statements and financial analysis.
  • Oversees annual external audit and works with the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors to ensure compliance with all applicable financial, accounting, legal, and regulatory requirements, and best-practice standards; and ensures a system of strong internal controls.
  • Oversees all tax matters and other reporting requirements that may affect The Association as required by law.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with relevant laws and tax obligations, and manages organizational risk and liabilities, ensuring proper liability coverage (D&O, cybersecurity, key person, etc.).
  • Oversees and reports on The Association's investments, including ensuring the timely reporting of investment activities as well as managing and monitoring endowment projections and distributions.
  • Oversees The Association's defined contribution retirement plan for legal compliance and investments.
  • Reviews all contracts and service agreements.
  • Acts as The Association's representative in will and bequests matters.
  • In coordination with the Executive Vice President and COO as well as the Vice President for Development, identifies, cultivates, and solicits major gifts for The Association.
  • Serves as liaison between staff and various committees of the Board of Directors.
  • Serves as primary contact on behalf of The Association for banking and investing relationships.
  • Cultivates relationships with peers at Texas A&M, other fundraising affiliates, and the local community.
Leads the Finance Division:
  • Develops and leads strategic efforts for the Finance Division, including developing short- and long-term strategic plans and goals and providing the necessary tools and resources to achieve them.
  • Assembles, supervises, and develops staff within the Finance Division, providing progressive direction, consultation, and oversight; fostering an environment of professional team service; and leading, coaching, and motivating staff within the division to be an effective, efficient, and high-performing team.
  • Oversees the accounting, accounts payable, and gift processing functions to ensure best practices and compliance with all applicable legal and regulatory standards.
  • Oversees the information systems, information technology, and print and mail services teams, all database functions, and relationships with infrastructure and software vendors.
Participates in and provides input on various Association-wide activities:
  • Actively contributes toward efforts to achieve our culture, engagement, and fundraising goals.
  • Provides on-site event support for Board and Leadership Council meetings.
  • Participates on internal event teams and task committees.
  • Participates in Association events, including Aggie Muster, Aggie Ring Day, All-Aggie Grad Party, All-Aggie Hullabaloo, Distinguished Alumni Gala, Reunions, Pass It Back Day, Thank an Ag Day, gameday receptions, and others as required.
Serves as an ambassador for The Association:
  • Meets our Team Expectations.
  • Supports The Association's marketing, communications, and branding initiatives.
  • Fosters relationships with students, former students, faculty, staff, and friends of Texas A&M.
  • Attends external events in support of the Executive Vice President and COO or on behalf of The Association, as directed.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, while working independently with minimal supervision or collaboratively with a variety of unique individuals with diverse personalities. The ability to articulate complex information with clarity using strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, including superior listening and presentation skills and the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders. Understanding of the unique characteristics of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Commitment to continuing education and professional development. Ability to use standard office equipment and software. Proficiency with financial-management and accounting software systems and programs, and understanding of GAAP-basis accounting.

Preferred: Strong leadership and management skills, with experience developing and leading high-performing teams. Proven track record of successful financial management, including experience developing and implementing financial strategies, managing budgets, and overseeing financial reporting and compliance. Certified Public Accountant.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Strong commitment to the mission and vision of The Association of Former Students, with the ability and desire to serve as an advocate for the organization and Texas A&M University. High energy level and selfless, intrinsic motivation. Availability to work evenings and weekends, as needed. Occasional travel, including overnight stays, weekends, and evenings, in support of Association events and initiatives.

EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

Required: Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. Ten years of progressively responsible financial and/or accounting experience, including supervisory experience, knowledge of tax and law of nonprofit organizations.

Preferred: Master's degree in accounting or finance. Graduate of Texas A&M University. Prior experience (i) as a Chief Financial Officer, (ii) within the finance division of a nonprofit organization, and/or (iii) leading teams related to finance, accounting, information systems, and/or information technology.
