Reporting directly to the Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Controller/Director, Finance and Accounting will oversee accounting practices, policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accurate financial reporting. This role involves supervising daily accounting operations, ensuring prompt and accurate transaction recording, and maintaining high standards of financial integrity. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated with strong leadership skills, adept at supervision and review, and possess excellent communication and customer service skills.

The Controller/Director, Finance and Accounting will manage tight deadlines and a variety of accounting functions including general ledger maintenance, monthly closing processes, financial reporting, and preparation for year-end audits.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Supervise daily accounting operations to maintain compliance with financial policies and procedures.
  • Manage and review work of accounting team members (Senior Accountant, Accountant, Finance Officer - Accounts Payable).
  • Maintain detailed financial transaction records and files.
  • Address complex accounting issues and inquiries promptly and professionally.
  • Review general ledger monthly for accuracy.
  • Produce accurate and timely financial statements, project reports, and ad hoc financial reports.
  • Keep VP of Finance informed on financial controls, accounting matters, and reporting.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to accounting processes and procedures.
  • Oversee and enhance integrated financial management system (Intacct).
  • Manage filing of tax forms (1099s, 1042, 990, etc.).
  • Act as backup for payroll processing.
  • Coordinate annual audit preparation including scheduling and resource coordination.
  • Develop and maintain accounting policies and procedures manual.
  • Provide training as needed to new and existing staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles.
  • Supervisory skills and ability to motivate and engage teams.
  • Critical thinking skills for financial data analysis and decision-making.
  • Change management experience to support innovation and manage challenges.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance required; CPA preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of nonprofit GAAP required.
  • Six to eight years of progressive accounting experience, including at least three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Three years of nonprofit experience required; public accounting experience preferred.
  • Experience in payroll processing and familiarity with federal grants desirable.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong commitment to accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively in a deadline-driven environment with multiple priorities.
  • Second-language proficiency a plus.
