SUMMARY Under general direction, is responsible for planning and teaching Journalism and Writing Classes and publishing a department newsletter in accordance to the needs and preferences of individuals served.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities of the Community Specialist - Journalism will include, but are not limited to the following: • Creates lesson plans and conducts Journalism and Writing classes at day program sites and in the community. • With the assistance of individuals, regularly publishes a Day Habilitation newsletter. • Orders and maintains supplies. • Assists programs in organizing staffing, transportation and logistics for community based writing activities. • Creates compelling and attractive flyers to advertise upcoming opportunities. • Works with individuals to create original essays, poems and other forms of writing. • Identifies community arts and cultural organizations to collaborate with, and establishes opportunities for individuals to interact and collaborate with other journalists and writers. • Implements universal precautions at all times. • Participates in in-service training programs as requested. • Provides supervision and guidance to Direct Support Professionals during classes and community events. • Keeps abreast of changes in the field. • Performs other related duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English • Excellent oral and written communication skills • Excellent organization skills and ability to meet deadlines • Proficiency in the use of a personal computer and appropriate software • Good interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with coworkers, individuals served, employees, parents and outside contacts • Ability and willingness to adjust work schedule to attend and facilitate events that occur outside of regular business hours • Ability and willingness to travel to various program sites.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE • Bachelor's Degree • At least six months experience with individuals with disabilities.

COMPENSATION $25-$26.50/hour plus Industry Leading Benefits
