The Department of Family and Community Medicine has an exciting leadership opportunity for an experienced and dynamic Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner (FNP). This position will serve as the Department's Senior Nurse Practitioner Leader with clinical oversight and supervision of all APP's and as the Associate Clinical Director at our University of Maryland Immediate Care (UMIC) location. This position will provide urgent care and primary care services at both our UMIC & Waterloo Urgent Care (Columbia) practice locations Monday - Friday from 8am-5pm. The FNP must be confident in practicing as a solo provider. The FNP will work using established guidelines and clinical protocols under the supervision of a Medical Director.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
* Master of Science degree in Nursing with completion of a Nurse Practitioner program; Registered and currently recorded with the Maryland Board of Examiners of Nurses and Certified as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of Maryland.
* DEA and CDS eligible
* CPR required
* ACLS/BCLS as required

*Minimum of at least 5 years experience as a Nurse Practitioner

*Minimum of 3 years' experience in an urgent care setting

*Minimum of 2 years' experience in a supervisor/management role.
* A minimum of one year experience as a Registered Nurse is required and at least 3+ years of Urgent Care experience.
* Demonstrates ability to promote professionalism through involvement in professional organizations, teaching, research, publishing, and/or certification in area of specialty.
* Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient population(s) served. Ability to demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's requirements relative to his or her population-specific and age specific needs.
* Demonstrates highly effective verbal and written communication skills are required to interact with patient families, departmental units, medical and nursing staff on all essential matters.
* Maintains updated mandatory training.
* Updates immunizations as recommended per practice area.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

A. Assists the Clinical Program Manager and collaborates with the Medical Director in facilitating the development, support and management of the NP group within a specific service line. This includes improving patient throughput, patient and staff education, patient satisfaction as well as activities for inpatient settings such as early patient discharge and participation in hospital task forces.
B. Monitors competency, documentation and outcomes of care given by Nurse Practitioners within service line. Identifies ways to facilitate working relationships among all levels of staff to meet patient care requirements.
C. Is responsible for creating nurse practitioner schedules and ensuring appropriate staffing patterns and coverage within a service line.
D. Coordinates work assignments, training and evaluation in accordance with established policies and procedures.
E. Interviews and recommends hiring of Nurse Practitioners within service line.
F. Provides input into the annual performance evaluations of staff and recommends disciplinary measures when necessary.
G. Coordinates orientation for Nurse Practitioners within service line. Develops dept. level education, including in-services and teaching materials.

Clinical Responsibilities
A. In collaboration with the attending physician and in accordance with the Written Agreement as approved by the Joint Committee for Nurse Practitioners, provides day to day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare provider team.
B. Performs comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted/scheduled to service/practice setting.
C. Orders, obtains and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests.
D. Establishes medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings.
E. Designs, orders and documents appropriate treatment plans/plans of care including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results.
F. Initiates protocols/clinical pathways, evaluates the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.
G. Performs invasive procedures.
H. Collaborates with attendings and residents regarding admission, discharge and transfer decisions.
I. Presents patients in the Nurse Practitioner's caseload on rounds.
J. Communicates plan of care with appropriate providers including the collaborative physician, the primary care provider, the referring provider, the nursing staff, and the case manager.
K. Communicates plan of care with the patients and family members. Provides patient and family instruction related to the plan of care, disease process, new treatment plans, and medication regimens.
L. Counsels and educates patients and family members in disease process, health maintenance and health promotion activities. Provides primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive care services.
M. Initiates appropriate referrals and specialty consultations or other agency involvement as needed.
N. Facilitates patient flow. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team including case management ensuring appropriate and timely discharge.
O. Provides specialty consultation.
P. Advocates for patients ensuring patient/family participation in care, knowledge of treatment options, and understanding of patient rights.
Q. Considers the holistic needs of patients and orchestrates resources (i.e. Pain service, palliative care)
R. Performs other activities as delineated in individual nurse practitioner written agreements.

Education Responsibilities
A. Provides formal and informal educational programs for other members of the health care team consistent with evidence-based practice standards.
B. Participates in mentoring activities. Precepts students.
C. Promotes understanding of disease processes in area of specialty/program.
D. Functions as a clinical resource for other team members including but not limited to interns, residents, fellows, nurses, and medical students.
E. Provides community education, health promotion and outreach.
F. Acts as a community health resource for specialty disease entity.
G. Works with physician leaders and administration to achieve service specific outcome targets for key metrics including clinical outcomes, LOS, cost of care and patient satisfaction.
H. Participates in performance improvement activities aimed at improving clinical outcomes and minimizing variation.
I. In collaboration with physician leadership and the multidisciplinary team, develops clinical pathways.
J. Participates in and leads quality assurance activities (i.e., chart reviews, peer review) and establishes standard of practice.
K. Advances the patient care delivery process through the application of research, evidence-based practice standards, and industry best practices.
L. Advises and influences policy and procedure that improves the delivery of care.
M. Introduces and evaluates new patient care delivery systems, models of care and therapeutic and preventive interventions that target patient needs not met by current care delivery strategies.
N. Actively participates and contributes to various department and division meetings and organizational initiatives.
O. Maintains compliance and regulatory documentation for administrative purposes and reimbursement for services.
P. Participates in accreditation readiness.
Q. Supervises ancillary staff including completing annual reviews.

Professional Development and Organizational Leadership
A. Serves on department, hospital and community committees.
B. Participates in and presents at local, regional, and national professional organizations.
C. Promotes the organization to all customers. Acts as a loyal and supportive informed spokesperson for the hospital.

Research Responsibilities
A. Serves as a clinical trial sub investigator participating in or coordinating all phases of industry sponsored research.
B. Doctorally prepared nurse practitioners are expected to conduct nursing research as the principle investigator adding to the body of knowledge in the nursing domain.
C. Uses the electronic medical record as documented in the department and/or FPI standard operating procedure and processes.
D. Completes mandatory employee health, workers compensation, HR processes and other training and requirements in required time frame to insure compliance with all FPI rules and regulations.
