The Neurodiagnostic Technologist Level 3 performs standard and complex Neurodiagnostic procedures for patients with limited supervision as directed according to established standards and practices. Provides technical assistance and training to other technologists and students. Supports and promotes quality standards and expectations. Identifies and recommends opportunities for process improvements further promoting patient and team member safety and enhanced patient care operations. Completes all necessary documentation for departmental records and patient procedures. Supports all functions, goals, and objectives of the department as well as development of any new programs that involve the Neurodiagnostic Lab and Epilepsy Unit. Performs all the duties of the Neurodiagnostic Technologist Level 2.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Neurodiagnostic Technologist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

Electrode Placement
1. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp.
2. Routinely achieves impedance levels below 10k ohms.

Routine EEGs
3. Performs standard EEG recordings according to the departmental protocols including awake and asleep, bedside, isolation, geriatric, pediatric, neonatal, etc.
4. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp.
5. Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on the history, clinical observations, and EEG findings.
6. Compiles data on patient's neurologic status and clinical history which may be pertinent to interpretation of the Neurodiagnostic procedure from the chart, patient or family, etc.
7. Completes both technical and professional bills upon completion of study and enters billing number in the record.
8. Documents completion of study in the electronic log.

Video EEGs
9. Performs standard Video EEG Long Term Monitoring recording according to the department protocols.
10. Utilizes the International 10-20 Electrode Placement system to measure, mark and apply electrodes to the predetermined positions on the patient's scalp.
11. Maintain and replace electrodes as needed to maintain the integrity of the EEG recordings.
12. Collects patient information pertinent to the interpretation of these tests and employs proper procedures for testing.
13. Compiles data on patient's neurologic status and clinical history which may be pertinent to interpretation of the Neurodiagnostic procedure from the chart, patient or family, etc.
14. Performs editing and pruning of studies with limited supervision.
15. Performs filing and archiving of patient records.
16. Adapts methods and instrumentation to obtain optimal results based on the history, clinical observations, and EEG findings.
17. Completes both technical billing after completion of the study.
18. Documents completion of study in the electronic log.

Epilepsy Surgery
19. Collaborates with Epileptologist and Neurosurgeon for grid placement for epilepsy surgical evaluations.
20. Able to set up surgical amplifiers to meet the needs for each individual surgery.
21. Programs patient specific montages into the equipment for each epilepsy surgical case.
22. Accompanies Epileptogolist and Neurosurgeon on the operating room to support electrode testing.
23. Records electrocorticography in the operating room during epilepsy surgeries.
24. Assists Neurologists in cortical stimulation.
25. Performs EEG data acquisition during WADA and PET testing.
26. Able to connect the patient to the amplifier after returning from the operating room.
27. Able to monitor study appropriately with limited supervision.
28. Edits and clips study appropriately with limited supervision.
29. Performs other duties as assigned to support the Epilepsy Surgery program

Evoked Potentials
30. Performs standard Visual Evoked Potentials, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials, and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials according to ACNS guidelines.
31. Ensures technical quality of recordings by making adjustments as necessary.

Support During Seizures
32. Provides supportive patient care and detailed observations of clinical manifestations during seizure and other patient emergency situations.
33. Assesses patient's memory, language, and patient's ability to follow commands during patient events. Place call to EMS in the event of an external medical emergency. Notifies interpreting physicians in the event the patient has a seizure during recording.

Customer/Peer Relations
34. Works in a professional and collaborative manner with all team members and physicians in the delivery of patient care and monitoring.
35. Displays a commitment of the value of teamwork by building strong relationships with patients, families, and team members. Cooperates and collaborates to perform duties promoting a unified and spirited workplace.

Departmental Protocols
36. Follows all department protocols
37. Complies with all departmental policies described in the Departmental Policy and Procedure Manual.

Neurodiagnostic Equipment
38. Maintains all neurodiagnostic equipment in good working order.
39. Inspects for malfunctions and makes minor adjustments. Reports to manager/designee for major repairs. Cleans equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and within established HMH policy and procedure.

Continuing Education
40. Enhances professional growth and development through annual participation in educational programs, in-services, workshops, reading current publications on Neurophysiology testing/technology and Neurological disease, online CME through various professional organizations and manufacturers, and viewing recorded educational programs.

Safety and Infection Control
41. Practices universal precautions and follows all safety and infection control policies.
42. Disinfects and cleans equipment according to the manufacturer's guidelines and standards outlined in the Infection Control policy and Department policy.
43. Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients/families/visitors/team members in accordance with hospital standards.
44. Reports Risk Management concerns.
45. Responsible for completing all hospital and department annual mandatory requirements.

46. Other duties and/or projects as assigned.
47. Adheres to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
1. Exerts up to 50lbs of force occasionally and up to 25lbs to move objects.
2. Substances- potential exposure to hazardous substances, chemicals, equipment, and reagents.
3. Blood- borne pathogens exposure
4. Contact Job- potential exposure to patient blood and/or body fluids or airborne contaminants.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

1. Associate's Degree in Electroneurodiagnostic Technology or equivalent
2. At least 3 years experience in electroneurodiagnostic technology
3. Demonstrates the ability to follow verbal instructions.
4. Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
5. Working knowledge of computer applications such as Microsoft or Google productivity suite

Licenses and Certifications Required:

1. AHA Basic Health Care Life Support HCP Certification.
2. American Board of Registration for Encephalographic Technologists Certification - R.EEG.
3. Certificate in Neurodiagnostic Technology.

Licenses and Certifications Preferred:

1. CLTM Registration/Credential through ABRET
