Organizational Overview Foundation for Essential Needs (FFEN) is a capacity building nonprofit helping food shelves do better so that Minnesotans facing food insecurity can do better.

FFEN’s mission is to reshape food shelf operations to consistently provide fresh, familiar foods and dignified experiences for their clients/shoppers.

Since 2013, FFEN has worked alongside 250+ food shelves to implement best practices tailored to local context by providing strategic consultation, data insights, and professional development. Working with FFEN, food shelves are able to ensure that local community donations and volunteer resources are used to make the greatest impact for those facing food insecurity. FFEN currently has four full time employee positions and one AmeriCorps*VISTA.

Over the last five years, FFEN’s budget has grown from $125,000 to over $700,000 annually, with some variability based on funding provided to food shelves.

Position Purpose FFEN’s Development & Communications Manager will oversee fundraising efforts to sustain and advance the organization’s mission while managing communication strategies to increase organizational awareness and engagement.

The Development & Communications Manager will be responsible for completing proposals and reports to corporate, foundation, and government funders while researching and identifying new institutional funding opportunities that align with FFEN’s strategic priorities. The Development & Communications Manager will drive individual giving and donor engagement through giving campaigns, segmented communications, and appeals, and partnering with FFEN’s Executive Director and Board of Directors to build and deepen donor relationships. Finally, the Development & Communications Manager will manage a multi-channel communications plan, partnering with staff, volunteers, and partners to convey FFEN’s work and impact to a variety of audiences.

The Development & Communications Manager is a full-time (40 hours a week) position. This role is a hybrid in-office/remote position with the ability to work from FFEN’s Office in Minneapolis and another location of choice (i.e. a home office or shared workspace). Applicants must be able to travel locally within the Twin Cities and across Minnesota for up to 10% of their role.

Responsibilities Grants Management: Manage annual grants calendar, tracking upcoming proposal and report deadlines and working proactively to gather required information.

Complete grant proposals and reports working in close collaboration with FFEN Executive Director and staff as needed.

Research and pursue new funding opportunities that align with FFEN’s programs and strategic priorities.

Partner with Executive Director to develop relationships with key funders and partners.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date grant records, issuing grant acknowledgement letters and tracking relevant information for accounting and reporting purposes.

Individual Giving: Create segmented annual donor engagement calendar to effectively cultivate, solicit, and steward individual donors.

Manage two annual multi-channel giving campaigns to engage current and new donors.

Oversee the planning for annual fundraising breakfast event to engage individual donors and organizational partners.

Partner with FFEN’s Executive Director and Board Members to sustain and deepen relationships with FFEN’s top individual donors.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date donor and donation information, providing gift acknowledgements, tracking relevant data for accounting purposes, and creating reports to analyze donor trends.

Communications: Develop segmented annual communications calendar to engage organizational stakeholders through email, social, online, and print communications.

Create compelling content including organizational narratives, programmatic updates, stories, photos, presentations, and other visuals to effectively convey FFEN’s unique role and impact in the hunger relief system.

Lead the creation of key print materials, including FFEN’s annual report as well as other promotional and informational materials.

Ensure FFEN’s website and online presence remains current and accurately reflects ongoing and emerging efforts.

Support planning for periodic volunteer and community engagement events.

Partner with program teams to identify and promote volunteer opportunities.

Maintain accurate and up-to-date contact lists to support segmented communication strategies and analyze engagement trends.

Organizational Engagement: Build positive, authentic, and effective relationships with staff, board, and volunteers.

Bring personal and professional perspective to support broader organizational directions and inform best approaches.

Position Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience

5+ years’ experience in fundraising, communications, and/or related work in nonprofit

Excellent written and verbal communication skills including grant-writing experience

Detail-oriented project management skills and initiative in a flexible work environment

Adaptive and capable of balancing multiple priorities and deadlines

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Canva, as well as knowledge of database systems

A driver’s license and reliable vehicle with ability to travel, as needed

Benefits: FFEN offers a flexible, unlimited PTO policy alongside 80 hours of Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) annually.

Additionally, it is standard organizational practice for the FFEN office to close the week of July 4th and the last week of the calendar year.

FFEN employees are eligible for a $250 monthly medical reimbursement and a 3% retirement contribution match immediately upon their start date.
