Metal additive manufacturing technology is evolving quickly from a niche tool used primarily in university research to an industry tool to develop and manufacture products faster and at a lower cost. Xact Metal, headquartered in State College, PA, is making metal additive manufacturing systems affordable for small- to mid-sized companies who need prototyping, tooling, and manufacturing of parts, but could not previously afford metal powder-bed fusion systems.

Job Location: State College, Pennsylvania. This is not a remote work position.

Job Description: Mechanical Engineer
The Mechanical Engineer will design new printers and associated components and improve their manufacturing by applying engineering principles and procedures, standard test methods and instrumentation, and knowledge of material characteristics and manufacturing best practices, to ensure the company produces and delivers world-class 3D printing systems in accordance with customer/project specifications, budget, quality control standards, and delivery expectations.

Overall responsibilities include, but are not limited, to the following:
  • Design, evaluate and validate mechanical, electromechanical, and opto-mechanical products and systems by developing and testing specifications and methods.
  • Study customer requirements, research and test manufacturing and assembly methods, and solicit observations from printer users.
  • Develop manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment for fabricating, building, assembling, and installing components.
  • Assure system and product quality by designing testing methods; testing finished product and system capabilities; and confirming fabrication, assembly, and installation processes.
  • Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
  • Provide engineering information by answering questions and requests.
  • Maintain product compliance with government regulations, including laser safety, CE, etc.
  • Keep equipment operational by coordinating maintenance and repair services; following manufacturer's instructions and established procedures; and requesting special services.
  • Complete projects by training and guiding technicians.
  • Assist with the purchase of materials and equipment and ensuring production procedures efficiently utilize materials/inventory.
  • Contribute to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Minimum Job Entry Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience working in mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with product development, including hands-on prototyping, concept development, and mechatronics system integration.
  • Superior computer skills, with solid experience in CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and CAE/FEA tools.
Desired Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
(These are a plus, not required)
  • Passion for 3D printing.
  • Work experience in Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing.
  • Hands-on experience in mechatronics machine/system design.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
  • Applicants must be authorized to work full-time in the United States. This company does not sponsor work visas.
  • Certain local, overnight regional, national, and international travel may be necessary but is not routine. Travel requirements include having a valid Pennsylvania driver's license and being responsible for your own transportation to and from local/regional industry/business events when necessary. For international travel, you must have a valid passport. Travel expenses will be reimbursed according to company policy.

The job is primarily performed indoors in a traditional office setting. The individual must constantly talk, hear, stand, or sit for extended periods while using a computer, telephone, or other productivity devices to communicate with other personnel and conduct business. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. Individuals frequently use their hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects and computer keyboards. The employee is occasionally required to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch or crawl, squat, turn/twist, and smell. The individual must frequently lift, carry, push, or pull up to 5 pounds and/or occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

On a frequent and routine basis, this job also requires the individual to be physically present in a (light industrial), temperature-controlled, air-filtered manufacturing area to communicate with others and conduct business. The noise levels in the facility can also vary widely in different regions and specific workspace restrictions are also possible. Occasional sitting, standing, moving forward/back/side-to-side, and working around machinery and moving parts is possible; exposure to electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dust, gases, chemicals, oils, sealants, solvents, and other compounds is possible.

Site conditions will dictate using proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including eye, hearing, and respiratory protection, a protective smock, steel-toe shoes, gloves, hard hats, or face shields. Contact lenses may not be allowed in some areas.
