The Department of Mechanical Engineering within the College of Engineering at Penn State University is excited to announce an opening for a tenured or tenure-track role at the Associate Professor level in Mechanical Engineering. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in experimental turbomachinery aerodynamics and heat transfer, especially in the area of instrumentation. The selected candidate will lead and conduct research within the Steady Thermal Aero Research Turbine (START) Laboratory.
The Department boasts over 60 faculty members, 400 graduate students, and 1,000 undergraduate students, engaging in more than $20 million annually in funded research across a diverse range of traditional and innovative fields. Penn State actively promotes interdisciplinary research collaboration through university-level institutes focused on materials, health, and energy. The Department offers distinct B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in mechanical engineering, including online graduate options in mechanical engineering and additive manufacturing and design. The START Lab, situated within the Department, emphasizes sustainable propulsion and power generation through innovative turbine technologies. It is recognized as a center of excellence for two major gas turbine manufacturers and receives substantial support from various federal agencies. To qualify for this position, candidates must hold a doctorate in engineering or a related discipline, completed by the start date. Successful applicants will demonstrate a proven track record as an educator or researcher, showcasing an established reputation in scholarly or professional achievements relevant to aerodynamics and heat transfer in turbomachinery. This includes specific expertise in the experimental characterization of turbine cooling and efficiency, particularly in high-temperature environments, alongside a strong commitment to engineering education and to the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels, continue to enhance the START Lab's international reputation through impactful externally-funded research, and contribute to the department, college, university, and profession through service activities.
