About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team at the Applied Research Laboratory at the Penn State University. As a key member of our Engineering Systems Research and Development Division, you will be responsible for designing, analyzing, building, and testing hardware for undersea applications.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and Development: Analyze requirements, identify problems, and develop innovative solution concepts for complex mechanical systems.

  • Structural Design: Design structures, mechanisms, actuation systems, and bearing systems to meet performance and safety requirements.

  • Documentation and Collaboration: Work with drafting to create and approve drawings, develop assembly and test procedures, and collaborate with technicians to perform assembly and testing of systems and sub-systems.

  • Project Management: Plan and perform technical tasks of a larger scope, lead specific tasks within the project scope, and manage projects of small or moderate size and scope.

  • Mentorship and Leadership: Mentor junior engineers and technicians, and demonstrate willingness to manage small to moderate-sized projects.

Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering or Science discipline.

  • Experience: 5+ years' related experience, with additional experience and/or education required for higher-level positions.

  • Skills: 3D CAD design and engineering drawing development (Siemens NX preferred), ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T ANSI Y14.5), proficiency in completing free body diagrams, and packaging of complex electromechanical assemblies.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Structural Analysis: Experience with structural or thermal finite element analysis.

  • Education: Degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
