Background

CRS' Institutional Donor Engagement and Advancement (IDEA) department advances the agency's strategic position by engaging new and existing institutional donors to acquire and steward resources that deliver excellent programs to advance CRS' mission and agency strategy (Vision 2030). Teams within IDEA focus on three main functional areas: engaging donors, prospects, and strategic partners; delivering on outcomes as outlined in the institutional award agreements, in compliance with donor requirements; and acquisition of new resources through business development activities.

Job Summary:

The Business Development (BD) Specialist is part of IDEA's BD Team, reporting directly to the Senior BD Specialist, Strategic Initiatives & KML. The IDEA BD Team moves forward strategic BD initiatives and supports critical KML tasks as prioritized by BD leadership and CRS' BD Community of Practice (CoP). Working with the Senior BD Specialist, Strategic Initiatives & KML, the position will manage key learning platforms (dashboards, SharePoint pages) and communication channels (Teams pages, email inboxes) for the BD CoP and will support the planning and coordination of BD CoP activities and learning events. The position will also support regular and ad hoc BD reporting and data analysis. IDEA's BD Team also provides high-quality surge support to CRS country programs, regions and HQ teams on strategic funding opportunities. Matrixed to IDEA's Growth Strategy and Support Unit (GSSU), the BDS I (KML) will provide BD surge support to live proposal funding opportunities.

Roles and Key Responsibilities:

BD KML Responsibilities:
  • In collaboration with the Senior BDS, Strategic Initiatives & KML, jointly develop and execute a strategy to regularly engage with the Global BD CoP to better understand KML needs.
  • Support the planning and coordination of BD CoP activities and learning events, including the monthly Connect and Reflect sessions, global CoP newsletter and global BD Summits.
  • Help develop and maintain tools, guidelines, templates and other resources to improve BD processes for the wider BD CoP; this includes maintaining a database of key BD tools and resources and assigned BD subject matter expert (SME) owners.
  • Liaise closely with assigned BD SME owners to communicate schedules for tool and resource updates/development and provide instructions on inputs needed.
  • Track and report BD data; assist with analysis of successes and failures and dissemination of lessons learned. Assist in developing analytical reports for internal and external use.
  • With the BD team and others, refine or create appropriate staff development materials (training, distance learning, self-study) to support building of capacity in resource acquisition, such as assessment and proposal development skills, basic elements of donor compliance, intelligence-gathering, etc.
  • Actively contribute to CRS' BD CoP and advance CRS' BD practices through contributions to strategic initiatives and learning events.
  • Work closely with the Senior BD Specialist, Strategic Initiatives & KML to lead a process to develop a written BD KML strategy, architecture, and governance approach.
  • Manage key learning platforms for the BD CoP, such as the IDEA and BD MyCRS (SharePoint) and Microsoft Teams sites. Support the Senior BD Specialist, Strategic Initiatives & KML on developing new platforms when needed.
BD Surge Support Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to proposal development processes to ensure timely submission of high-quality proposals that are responsive to donor requirements, applicable regulations, and CRS' technical and cost standards.
  • Contribute to non-technical writing on proposals. Integrate inputs from staff and partners into a responsive, coherent proposal.
  • Research new opportunities and CRS' competitive position within the marketplace, and complete an overall competitor mapping exercise.
  • Support the preparation of proposal annexes, such as key personnel, institutional capacity, and past performance references.
  • Potentially serve as Acting BDS I for country programs with BDS I positions.
  • Lead the development of the monthly Resource Acquisition Report and provide significant support to the development of the annual State of Resource Mobilization Report and/or semi-annual resource updates, and other communications as needed.
  • Support the updating of the regular BD Consultant roster.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in international development, international relations, or related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years of international development experience, with at least two years experience in a developing country.
Required Languages - Fluent English; proficiency in French and/or Spanish a plus.

Travel - Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately 10% of the time to support training and learning events a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Good strategic, analytical, systems thinking, and problem-solving skills, with capacity to see the big picture.
  • Experience using MS Windows and MS Office packages (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), Web Conferencing Applications, and information management systems.
  • Good relationship management skills. Ability to relate to people at all levels internally and externally.
  • Good negotiation skills.
  • Very good communication and presentation skills.
  • Proactive, resourceful, solutions-oriented and results-oriented.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Very strong writer with expert command of English grammar and AP style.
  • Demonstrated experience with competitive proposals in programming contexts similar to CRS.
  • Familiarity with USG funding mechanisms and proposal requirements.
  • Knowledge of CRS programs, justice agenda and Catholic Social Teaching principles a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to edit and format documents, presentations, SharePoint sites, and other products desired.
  • Experience with the use of or willingness to learn technologies for use to support KML, such as Power Bi, Miro, Powtoon a plus. Ability to quickly learn new tools and technologies; interest and experience in using technology and new platforms to improve work efficiency.
