EP&MD focuses on three mission contributions: Clean Fossil Energy, Electricity Infrastructure, & Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Responsibilities

The Advanced Energy Systems group (AES) is focused on applied research and development in the areas of chemical conversions, applied advanced materials, and the development of novel processes. The AES group is currently seeking an experienced Systems Analyst to contribute to a broad base of research and development, including carbon capture and utilization, hydrogen production and storage, advanced separations, and thermochemical and biochemical conversions of biomass to biofuels. The qualified candidate will develop process models, economic evaluations, and life-cycle assessments that will be used to make recommendations to PNNL projects, industrial partners, and the Department of Energy (DOE). The process and economic models range from analyzing unit operations to full systems (e.g., conceptual commercial-scale flowsheets for chemical processes). Aspen Plus® and CHEMCAD are the primary flowsheet development tools used. Oral and written reporting of research results is expected with a focus toward publications in peer-reviewed journals and presenting at conferences.

The responsibilities of the position include the following:
  • Interact with PNNL staff to describe specific process and economic research goals, working collaboratively with other DOE national labs in supporting overall DOE programmatic goals.
  • Develop single unit or plant-scale designs for conceptual commercial processes.
  • Quantify economic and environmental metrics of performance from system designs and experimental data.
  • Manage analysis projects or tasks with a focus on scope, schedule and budget.
  • Prepare and present complex technical reports.
  • Lead manuscript development and maintain a strong publication record in the peer-reviewed scientific literature.
  • Present research at conferences and project review meetings.
  • Support or lead efforts to grow existing funded research, including grant proposal writing and developing relationships with key collaborators in industry, academia and other national laboratories.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
  • BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR-
  • PhD with 1+ year of relevant experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • An advanced degree in chemical engineering, or equivalent.
  • A strong fundamental understanding of thermodynamics, kinetics, process design, heat and mass transfer, and chemical separations.
  • Expertise with Aspen Plus®, CHEMCAD, or an equivalent flowsheet modeling tool.
  • Experience in chemical process development and the associated economic analyses, preferably in industry.
  • Familiarity with current technologies for point-source and direct-air carbon capture, and CO2 utilization.
  • Familiarity with current technologies for hydrogen generation and storage.
  • Experience working with a diverse set of government and/or industry teams.
  • Expertise in life cycle analysis and working knowledge of relevant tools, such as OpenLCA, SimaPro, or GREET.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to complex technical projects, with an emphasis on building technical recognition of the research area at the national level.
  • Excellent technical writing skills and a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • A demonstrated ability to lead or contribute to the development of competitive research proposals to government and private clients.
