Responsibilities
The Scientist/Engineer 3 candidate will work collaboratively with senior engineers and scientists and will have experience performing experiments and tests with little direction from senior engineers and scientists. The position requires the ability to make key technical contributions in setting technical direction. This position includes operating small scale treatment platforms. The successful candidate will serve as Principal investigator (PI) or co-PI on projects or tasks, providing technical direction to junior scientists, engineers, and technicians and integrating capabilities of team members. This may include supporting scoping, scheduling, and budgeting at a project or major task level. This position also requires the ability to apply a strong disciplined approach to experimental planning, execution, and reporting. The candidate will be expected to prepare high quality technical reports and presentations that communicate the objective, experimental process, results, and conclusions in a traceable, defensible manner.
This position will be expected to work with non-sensitive and sensitive information as appropriate for individual projects and the incumbent should demonstrate an ability to manage sensitive business situations. As a Scientist/Engineer 3, general responsibilities include:
Designing, developing, and operating processes or unit operations to create a diverse range of products. Evaluating and manipulating the chemical properties of various substances used in the fabrication of new products. Designing, modeling, evaluating, and implementing chemical processes, instrumentation, and equipment to ensure effectiveness in engineering and design. Performing trials, tests, and/or experiments to support engineering, production, and/or R&D activities. Applying the principles of chemistry, nuclear science, biology, physics, material science, math, and engineering to solve problems that involve the production, use or conversion of chemicals, materials, and energy. Uses the principles of biology and the tools of engineering to mimic biological systems to create products or to modify and control biological systems so that they can replace, augment, sustain, or control chemical and mechanical processes.Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
BS/BA and 5+ years of relevant work experience -OR- MS/MA and 3+ years of relevant work experience -OR- PhD with 1+ year of relevant experiencePreferred Qualifications:
PhD in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 3 years of related work or educational experience; or, Masters in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, chemistry, or related field plus 5 years of related work or educational experience. Demonstrated experience in plant systems design and/or systems engineering in a plant operating environment. Demonstrated experience with air pollution control systems and continuous emissions monitors. Knowledge of NQA-1 Quality Assurance requirements and a demonstrated ability to apply quality assurance principles to test planning, execution and documentation of testing and analysis activities. Member in a professional society/community.Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment
Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals; potential exposure to controlled levels of ionizing radiation. Experimental work involves exposure radiological materials and environment and typical laboratory chemicals and equipment that are appropriately assessed and managed to prevent exposing staff to hazards. Would need to become a Radiological Worker I or II to be able to support radioactive materials testing in radioactive designated areas.
Testing Designated Position
This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP). The candidate selected for this position will be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing for illegal drugs, including marijuana, consistent with the Controlled Substances Act and the PNNL Workplace Substance Abuse Program.
