STAFF ACCOUNTANT

ACCOUNTS PAYABLE

The Town of Westwood seeks a highly organized and dependable Staff Accountant to support the operations of the Accounting Department. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and time-management skills, a professional demeanor, and be a team player among the Finance team.

Representative duties include the following:
  • Responsible for complete Accounts Payable process, including review and data entry of all bill schedules from departments, and ensures compliance with UMAS accounting requirements.
  • Supervises the Accounts Payable process by overseeing the work of up to approximately 20 municipal and school Accounts Payable users.
  • Trains and directs staff in municipal and school departments on all phases of the Accounts Payable process.
  • Oversees the performance of accounting and bookkeeping duties related to Accounts Payable, including compliance with State and local regulations, ensuring availability of Town budget funds, and accuracy of information. Communicates with departments to resolve questions and discrepancies.
  • Prepares and reconciles schedules for all grants, special revenue, and capital project funds; reviews and works with departments to ensure accuracy. Schedules must be prepared timely and accurately.
  • Prepares and maintains fixed asset schedule on computer system. Monitors weekly warrant and determines appropriate data for fixed asset system.
  • Reviews invoices and all bill schedules for accuracy, availability of funds, compliance with accounting procedures, and appropriate authorization. Researches and answers questions from town departments and vendors on Accounts Payable issues.
  • Posts Accounts Payable to General Ledger and conducts account verification, balancing and reconciliation. Runs and submits electronic check reconciliation transmittals to bank.
  • Prepares and distributes monthly statement of accounts to town departments as well as departmental reports including budget status, receivables, special revenue and grant activity. Works with departments to resolve discrepancies and inaccuracies.

Qualifications and experience: Associate's degree in business, accounting, or related field; Bachelor's degree preferred; three years of progressively responsible experience in accounting work; experience working in a municipal setting preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Requires a general knowledge of municipal accounting and financial laws and procedures. Requires the ability to maintain accurate and detailed financial records and closely monitor activity. Requires good leadership skills to gain cooperation of decentralized accounts.

Salary and Benefits: Full-time, 37-hour per week union position with a salary range of $31.60 - $35.92 per hour in eight steps. Westwood offers an attractive benefits package.
