Description

The Family Service Assistant will assist in classrooms working collaboratively with the teacher and assistant teacher, to provide comprehensive family engagement and child development services for children and families. Assures compliance in the Head Start Act, Head Start Program Performance Standards, ODJFS Licensing Rules, and Step Up To Quality.

Position Requirements

Summary of Work Activities, Responsibilities, and Tasks:
  • Abide by applicable Agency rules and regulations.
  • Accept classroom assignments as indicated by staff requirements.
  • Recruit and enroll children and families to meet full enrollment.
  • Act as a substitute in the classroom, working with both child and their families.
  • Will provide coverage in the classroom during lunch hours and as needed.
  • Assimilate arriving children to the school environment by greeting them, helping them remove outerwear, and selecting activities of interest to them.
  • Assist assigned teacher and assistant teacher in all areas of classroom management and instruction when necessary and as needed.
  • Assist parents in the development of appropriate service plans, i.e. Family Partnership Agreement, Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), and Individual Educational Plan (IEP).
  • Assist parents with transitional activities into Head Start and from Head Start to other educational settings.
  • Assist staff with developmental screenings, and review health records to ensure that children receive recommended treatment and follow-up. Make home visits to families as needed or required.
  • Collaborate with community agencies to ensure that families connect to services that support their well-being.
  • Develop and maintain open channels of communication between Head Start, the family, and the community.
  • Engages in mutually respectful, positive, goal-oriented partnerships with families to promote positive child and family outcomes.
  • Inform families of Head Start services and promote parent engagement in all facets of the program.Participate in social service trainings, staff meetings, center parent meetings and other gatherings as required.
  • Partners with families to build strong parent-child relationships and supports parents as the first and lifelong educators of their children.
  • Provide training and education to families in using available resources and obtaining community services. Advocate for needed services in the community.
  • Recruit and enroll children and families to receive Head Start services.
  • Supports families' reflections on and planning for their safety, health, education, well-being, and life goals.
  • Supports families' use of community resources to make progress toward positive child and family outcomes.
  • Tracks and records information related to health and nutrition, attendance, parent engagement, and family-related services.
  • Works alongside parents to build on their strengths as advocates for their families and as leaders in the program and community.
  • Works with other professionals and agencies to support coordinated, integrated, and comprehensive services for families across the organization, community, and system.
  • Works within goals and objectives, policies, and procedures to meet Head Start Performance Standards, the Head Start Act, and all other LCCAA requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures and maintain a clean and safe learning environment for the students.
  • Interact appropriately with students, staff, and others in a positive and professional manner.
  • Maintain current, complete, accurate and timely records as required by the program, and ensure their confidentiality.
  • Meet with supervisor daily to submit completed assignments and discuss progress.
  • Must attend all in-service training, pre-service training and workshops provided by the program.
  • Provide responsive care to all children.
  • Support activity in the early childhood and family, health and community services area.
  • Work assigned shifts and hours as needed.

  • Using computers and computer systems (including hardware and software) to enter data or process information.
  • Using digital resources provided, including online productivity tools, e-learning, online reference sources, video-streaming sites, and interactive whiteboards for instruction and completing work.
  • Using relevant information and individual judgment to determine whether events or processes comply with laws, regulations, or standards.
Education & Experience Requirements:
  • High school diploma required.
  • CDA Certificate required or willing/able to enroll and obtain within 18 months of hire at Agency's expense; successfully obtaining a CDA credential is a condition for continued employment.
  • Family Development Certification required within 18 months of hire through agency provided training.
  • Six (6) month experience with children required; all related experience considered.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift, climb, stoop, sit, bend over, hear and see (corrected or uncorrected), reach above horizontal plane, speak and be understood to meet the needs of young children in a classroom and early learning settings.
  • Ability to see to monitor child safety.
  • Ability to see, hear and speak with/without assistive devices sufficient to communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time while caring for young children.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time in classroom and early learning settings.
  • Using hands and arms in handling, installing, positioning, and moving materials, and manipulating things.
Other Requirements:
  • Fingerprint submission for criminal background check as a condition of employment.
  • Pre-employment drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Pre-employment physical as a condition of employment.
  • Proof of education and credential (copy of credential certificate, official college transcripts, copy of diploma, etc.).
  • Valid driver's license.
