Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. We are currently seeking a Human Resources Generalist in the Human Resources department, reporting to the Senior Human Resources Manager.

The role will reside in the New York office with hybrid work capabilities and will be responsible for helping ensure the highest caliber business services staff is in place to support the firm's lawyers; oversees local office compliance and collaboration on firmwide projects, goals, policies and procedures; and contributes to cost-effective management. The Human Resources Generalist serves as a main point of contact for human resources issues within the office. The Human Resources Generalist is expected to serve as a positive role model and mentor for the staff, and to perform all responsibilities with a commitment to providing superior service to the firm's lawyers, efficient and effective departmental operations, and an atmosphere of teamwork and continuous improvement.

Key responsibilities of this position include:
  • In consultation with the Sr. Human Resources Manager, the HR Generalist shall provide HR assistance with employee relations, recruiting, compensation, performance assessment, and professional development for the local office as follows:
Employee Relations and Performance Assessment
  • Take proactive steps to ensure the strongest and most engaged workforce possible, including communicating effectively with lawyers and department management, and developing creative solutions to provide excellent service to the firm's lawyers.
  • Provide employee relations support to Sr. HR Manager and local office, escalating complex issues to management in a timely manner.
  • Provide guidance to managers on application of employee policies and procedures and assist in resolving policy issues.
  • Support and oversee annual business services evaluation process locally, ensuring that deadlines are met, debriefing meetings are held, and signed evaluations are filed.
  • Interpret personnel policies for managers and employees and ensure application is consistent with firm-wide practice; interpret ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local statutory employment regulations and provide guidance on their application in the workplace.
Business Services Recruiting, Onboarding and Integration
  • Assist with business services recruiting efforts for the office, working closely with the Business Services Recruiting team to ensure consistent practices and legal compliance.
  • Assist managers in creating and updating position descriptions and requisition forms for open positions.

  • Assist with coordination and delivery of staff onboarding and integration for new hires following standard firm procedures.

Compensation and Benefits Administration
  • Act as liaison with firm benefits personnel to administer the firm's benefits plans and programs for office personnel, including general oversight of the firm's annual open enrollment process for full participation and timeliness.
  • Work with benefits directors to ensure accurate, up-to-date understanding on various benefit plans.
  • Provide information to employees and escalate issues to firm benefits team as necessary.
  • Assist with FMLA and short-term disability leave management for office business services employees, coordinating with the Leave of Absence Administrator.
  • Oversee submission of workers' compensation claims for the office, in consultation with Firm HR personnel.
Staff Professional Development
  • Work with the talent development team to schedule and attend local training and development events.
Human Resources Technology
  • Ensure expertise in technology relevant to the position; strive for proactive use of the most current technology to further efficiency and internal customer service.
  • Enter all new hires, changes and departures into Lawson HRIS in a timely manner.
  • Monitor new hire and life event benefits enrollment information in benefit management system, and troubleshoot benefit issues and inquiries.
  • Serve as gatekeeper for the firm's contractor database and AGConnect directory to enter information not pulled from Lawson, entering required information for new hires and responding to directory inquiries from local office personnel.
  • Run verification and other reports as necessary.
  • Provide logistical support, such as scheduling, tracking, and attending local training and development events for the Talent, Training and Benefits teams.
General Human Resources
  • Remain current in industry trends in Human Resources and the legal profession.
  • Participate in the implementation of projects that increase the value of Human Resources services to business services employees and the firm.
  • Prepare all employment-related forms for staff, paralegals and attorneys.
  • Troubleshoot payroll issues and inquiries.
  • Participate in the implementation of projects that increase the value of Human Resources services to business services employees and the firm.
  • Coordinate the firm's exit procedures for departing personnel, including conducting exit interviews and ensuring compliance with all firm and office procedures.
  • Review, sign or otherwise approve HR correspondence and HR department bills for payment.
  • Participate in the annual budget process in consultation with Firm HR.
  • Actively participate in bi-weekly firmwide and other HR conference calls.
  • Respond to and oversee unemployment claims for the office, in consultation with Human Resources Manager and other Firm HR personnel.
  • Perform other administrative tasks or projects as needed.
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities):
  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Minimum of 5 years of related human resources experience, preferably in a law firm or other professional services organization
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong oral and written communication skills, discretion and tact
  • Commitment to maintain confidentiality of employee, office, firm and client information and adhering to the Firm's Core Values
  • Solid working knowledge of MS Office applications including Word, Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with HRIS, databases and reporting applications.
  • Familiarity with administration of Applicant Tracking, OnBoarding and Learning Management systems. SilkRoad and Profiscience knowledge preferred.
  • Strong organizational skills and unfailing attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and adjust to changing priorities and deadlines in a professional manner
