We are seeking a full-time Mechanical Engineer Professional at the Sierra Nevada VA Medical Center in Reno, NV. The Mechanical Engineer professional will be contributing to the design-build phase for the construction of a Central Utility Plant (CUP) on premise and decommissioning of the existing CUP.

Relevant Project Experience

  • The Mechanical Engineer Professional shall be able to quickly understand and master the requirements of the local state and federal jurisdictions and the requirements of each in relation to this project.
  • Experience in the resolution of unforeseen site and design conditions/problems and propose cost effective technical solutions.
  • Experience conducting inspections and inventories of such structures to identify and note deficiencies, problems, or the general physical condition of such structures.
  • Must have six (6) years of experience practicing mechanical engineering.
  • Must have six (6) years of experience inspecting mechanical construction.
  • The ideal candidate would be able to produce three (3) examples of a successful completed project of similar scope and scale to this task order.
Position Description
  • Conducts portions of daily inspections of site work, building construction work; documents discrepancies, code violations, improper materials, or techniques in the application of materials, substandard or poor-quality workmanship; monitors schedules on various aspects of ongoing daily activities to identify and mitigate project slippage and coordinate project phasing.
  • Maintain accurate and complete files relating to the Construction Management (CM) services on the project that the Government may inspect at any time.
  • Reviews contractor's submittals and RFIs; maintains accurate and complete job files including as-built drawings and specifications; identifies progress delays and recommends appropriate corrective measures to the lead engineer toward mitigating delays and maintaining the progress schedule.
  • Submit daily, weekly, and monthly reports indicating work completed, work in progress with estimated completion dates, work scheduled and outstanding work.
  • Utilize computerized management system applications, processing requests for information, project engineering, scheduling, communications, design assessments, safety compliance, testing compliance, record keeping, construction administration, budget control, change management, construction reporting, and documentation management control.
Requirements

Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of low Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, testing and balancing, operations, sheet metal duct systems and control systems including direct digital controls.
  • Knowledge of centralized plants including chillers, boilers, oxygen conveyance, and cooling towers.
  • Ability to provide cost estimates and take-offs for the mechanical contract modifications.
  • Ability to determine compliance of workmanship, materials, equipment and installed work with contract requirements and industry standards.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of building, safety, and environmental codes.
  • Working knowledge of environmental, civil, safety, architectural and structural fields.
  • Knowledge of governmental contracting procedures, principles, guidelines and public law.
Communication, Language, and Software Skills
  • Ability to utilize a variety of software programs to monitor, update, and produce work products by applying knowledge of computer literacy.
  • Ability to exercise good interpersonal skills.
Education, Certifications, Affiliation
  • An ABET-accredited Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an institution of higher learning. The individual shall have a minimum of six (6) years of experience in both design and construction.
Communication, Language, and Software Skills
  • Ability to utilize a variety of software programs to monitor, update, and produce work products by applying knowledge of computer literacy.
  • The Mechanical Engineer Professional must possess communication, language, and software skills with the ability to utilize a variety of software programs to monitor, produce, and update work products by applying knowledge of computer literacy Experience reviewing design and construction plans against existing site conditions.

Requirements

Experience Requirements:
  • An ABET accredited Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • A minimum of six (6) years of experience in construction and design
  • Provide three (3) project examples of similar completed work of scope and size
  • Experience in redesigning of HVAC systems and components
  • Performance of building heating and cooling load calculations
  • Knowledge of psychometrics
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE standards
  • Familiarity with ICC Building, Mechanical and Green Energy Codes
  • Knowledge of the Whole Building Design Guide
  • Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit
  • Experience performing whole building energy modeling a plus
  • Excellent report writing skills, computer and internet skills
  • Excellent communication and management skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to complete assignments on-time and within budget
  • Ability to utilize ladders, scaffolding and other vertical support systems as part of construction inspections.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds and spend several hours standing at any time.
