Feeding San Diego is a non-profit organization on a mission to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue. Established in 2007, Feeding San Diego rescues surplus food from local and national food donors before it goes to waste and gets it to people facing hunger in San Diego County. It is the only Feeding America partner food bank in the region.

Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

The Accounting Manager is responsible for assisting the Controller in overseeing the financial operations of the organization. This role includes managing the accounting team, ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and supporting the organization's mission through sound financial management. The Accounting Manager will work closely with other departments to provide financial insights and support decision-making processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management
  • Oversee the day-to-day financial operations of the food bank.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze board and management financial reports to ensure accuracy and completeness for Controller approval.
  • Maintain the general ledger and ensure all transactions are properly recorded.
  • Manage month-end and year-end closing processes.
Budgeting and Forecasting
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Monitor budget performance and report on variances.
  • Provide financial analysis to support strategic planning and decision-making.
Internal Controls and Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures.
  • Take lead in coordinating and preparing for external yearly audits.
Team Management
  • Supervise and mentor the accounting team, providing guidance and support.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and identify development opportunities.
  • Foster a collaborative and positive work environment.
Grant and Donor Management
  • Manage and report on grants and donor funds.
  • Ensure accurate tracking and reporting of restricted funds.
  • Assist with grant applications and financial reporting requirements.
Collaboration and Support
  • Work closely with other departments to provide financial insights and support.
  • Support fundraising efforts with financial information and analysis.
  • Participate in organizational meetings and contribute to strategic planning initiatives
INTERACTION

The position will interact closely with FSD employees, visitors, neighbors, volunteers, donors, and partner representatives. This position will also interact with all staff at Feeding San Diego.

Qualifications

EDUCATION/YEARS EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience, particularly in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. MBA or CPA certification is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or managerial role.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Non-profit accounting experience is highly desirable
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP and non-profit accounting standards
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Dynamics 365 (CERES) is desired
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Pro
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the food bank
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Personal computer, phone & Adobe Creative Suite subscription, copier, and printer.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Must have reliable transportation and possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, a satisfactory driving record, including proof of personal vehicle insurance coverage and insurability under the Agency's insurance carrier standards.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
  • Work in an office adjacent to a warehouse setting with occasional travel to other locations in San Diego County.
  • Prioritizes and multi-task work and projects requiring good memory, concentration, and analytical thinking.
  • Occasionally is required to perform the safe operation of office equipment and machines and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet but this office is maintained in a distribution center with machinery and large trucks.

PAY & HOURS

$100,000 to $120,000

Hybrid M-F; 2 days in office, 3 days remote; with occasional travel to other sites & work in evenings or weekends
