Overview:

The Principal Gift Officer plays a pivotal role in advancing the Ministry's philanthropic efforts. This position involves identifying, cultivating, and soliciting major donations from prospective donors, focusing on securing transformative monetary gifts to support Mercy's mission, strategic priorities, and initiatives. This position will prioritize individuals who are not yet affiliated with Mercy but whose philanthropic interests may align with the Ministry's top priorities.
Prospect Identification and Cultivation:
o Identifies and establishes new principal gift level opportunities and relationships. Builds creative, persistent outreach to new philanthropic individuals and entities based on the Ministry-wide fundraising campaigns.
o Develops personalized cultivation strategies for individual prospects, while tailoring approaches based on their interests and capacity to give.
o Collaborates with leadership and providers to engage prospects effectively.
o Conducts face-to-face meetings with prospects. Travels as necessary.
Solicitation and Relationship Building:
o Recommends and implements solicitation strategies for principal gifts emphasizing the alignment of their philanthropic goals.
o Works closely with ministry leaders to leverage their relationships and vision in securing support.
o Maintains a portfolio of prospects and provides outstanding stewardship by representing best practices.
Proposal Development:
o Collaborates with the Vice President of Philanthropy and the Director of Grants to develop and lead strategies for identifying and articulating compelling principal-level proposals to attract prospective donors. Guides the narrative, data, and budget development for proposals to principal level prospects.
Collaboration and Communication:
o Collaborates with colleagues across Foundations to ensure a cohesive approach to fundraising.
o Understands Ministry funding priorities and develops ideas for support.
o Cultivates relationships with corporate and foundation prospects as needed.
o Drafts materials to communicate impact and opportunities.
o Partners with Donor Engagement to announce and recognize donors, as appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • Experience: Ten years of progressive fundraising experience in a complex environment with five or more years direct experience with principal gifts.
  • Required Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, Public Administration, Healthcare Administration, Communications, Marketing, Philanthropy, or Social Sciences.
  • Other:
    Fundraising Expertise: Proven track record of securing 7- and 8-figure donations.
    Relationship Building: Exceptional ability to build and maintain relationships with high-net-worth individuals and key stakeholders.
    Strategic Thinking: Strong strategic planning skills to develop and implement effective fundraising strategies.
    Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate compelling proposals.
    Collaboration: Ability to work collaboratively with leadership, colleagues, and external partners.
    Technical and Analytical Skills: Understanding of Fundraising software programs. Proficient in analyzing donor data and trends to identify potential prospects.
    Travel Readiness: Willingness and ability to travel as necessary to meet with prospects and donors.
    Stewardship: Commitment to providing outstanding stewardship and maintaining best practices in donor relations.
    Knowledge of Philanthropy: Deep understanding of philanthropic principles, donor motivations, and the nonprofit sector.
    Project Management: Strong organizational and project management skills to handle multiple priorities, deadlines, and event campaigns effectively.
    Ethical Standards: High ethical standards and integrity in all interactions and transactions.
