Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant is responsible for preliminary work for preparation of financial statements every 4 weeks. Reviews general ledger account activity, reconciles accounts, prepares and posts journal entries. Analyzes costs, trends, budgets and processes and makes recommendations to management and executives. Assists other staff members in areas of accounts payable activity, billing and accounts receivable.
Pay and Benefits:
* Range of pay: $29.00 to $36.00/per hour

Roles & Responsibilities:
* Reviews invoices paid and checks for posting errors, escalating costs or unusual trends. Analyzes and approves invoices.
* Analyzes numerous general ledger accounts to verify accuracy and proper costs, reconciles balance sheet accounts to separate source documents, determines whether adjusting journal entry is needed and creates/posts journal entries
* Assists in the preparation and review of company financial statements: P&L reports, Balance sheet, Statement of Cash Flows, Bank Loan Covenant Compliance Certifications
* Advises supervisors and managers of costs, trends and makes recommendations for controlling or reducing those costs.
* Reviews internal accounting processes and methods and makes recommendations for streamlining and improvement
* Assist with various payroll-related transactions and programs such as 401k deferrals, garnishments, employee loans, collective bargaining agreement compliance and health insurance payroll deductions.
* Prepares or assists in preparation of payroll tax returns quarterly, annually and a variety of other governmental reports and returns.
* Prepares a variety of schedules and reconciliations. Examples may include temp labor, Hawaii/Alaska freight, container hauls, peg mileage
* Completes bank reconciliations
* Compiles and reconciles bank deposits. May prepare manual checks for signature as needed.
* Develops and completes various reports for executives
* Performs individual internal audit projects and brings issues or recommendations for improvements on internal control systems to superiors. Assists in the development of an internal audit plan.
* Performs other related duties and incidental work as required in the completion of assigned tasks.
Job Requirements:
Education. Position requires a bachelor's degree with coursework in Accounting. In the absence of formal education, experience of at least 2 years in an accounting leadership role may be substituted.
Experience. Position requires two to four years' experience in accounting field. Must have experience with analysis and completion of journal entries, accounts payable invoice and A/R billing processes. Internal audit experience or experience in public accounting field doing staff audits is a plus.
Knowledge. Must have demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with personal computers including associated business software (MS-Outlook, Word and Access) at intermediate level or above. Advanced Excel skills preferred. Position requires demonstrated knowledge of computer systems reporting.
Skills and Abilities: Position requires a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing and to present information both individually and in group settings. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail and accuracy. Ability to work evenings and/or weekends as may be necessary to complete projects. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Good leadership skills and ability to foster cooperative, positive working relationships. Needs excellent organizational and follow-up skills. Ability to work independently and use prudent judgment with sensitive or confidential subject matter. Willingness to travel to other distribution facilities to perform annual physical inventories or to explain financial programs and policies.
