Position Summary:

Accounting Manager

As a vital member of our Finance team, the Accounting Manager will support the Assistant Corporate Controller by managing a range of accounting functions within our waste management operations. This role involves overseeing P&L functions, financial analysis, lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and audit support. Additionally, the Accounting Manager will play a key role in budgeting processes and contribute to the overall financial strategy of the organization. This position offers an opportunity to drive financial performance and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting.

Responsibilities:

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other minor duties may be assigned.
  • P&L Management: Oversee the preparation and analysis of monthly profit and loss (P&L) statements. Ensure accuracy in reporting, review financial data to identify trends and variances, and provide actionable insights to the Assistant Corporate Controller and senior management.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct detailed financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. Review financial performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and recommend corrective actions to enhance financial outcomes.
  • Lease Accounting: Manage accounting for operating and finance leases in compliance with ASC 842 and other relevant accounting standards. Oversee the recording and tracking of lease-related transactions, including liabilities and right-of-use assets. Prepare and review lease amortization schedules.
  • Balance Sheet Reconciliations: Supervise and perform regular balance sheet reconciliations to ensure the accuracy and integrity of financial records. Investigate and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Prepaid Expenses: Manage the accounting for prepaid expenses, including recording, tracking, and amortizing costs. Ensure accurate recognition of expenses in the financial statements.
  • Fixed Assets: Oversee the accounting for fixed assets, including tracking asset acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation. Ensure accurate reporting and compliance with accounting standards related to fixed assets.
  • Audit Support: Provide support for internal and external audits by preparing schedules, documentation, and addressing auditor inquiries. Implement recommendations for enhancing financial controls and processes.
  • Budgeting: Assist in the budgeting process by preparing detailed budget forecasts and financial models. Monitor budget performance, analyze variances, and provide recommendations to align financial outcomes with strategic goals.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement process improvements to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of accounting operations. Promote best practices and streamline accounting procedures.
  • Team Leadership: Provide guidance and support to the accounting team. Mentor and develop staff, manage workloads, and conduct performance evaluations to ensure high levels of team performance and engagement.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA certification or progress towards CPA is preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience with at least 2 years in a managerial role. Experience in the waste management industry or a similar field is highly desirable.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in general ledger systems; experience with Microsoft Dynamics 365 or similar ERP systems is a plus.
    • Strong knowledge of GAAP and industry-specific accounting requirements.
    • Experience with lease accounting, balance sheet reconciliations, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, and budgeting.
  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Leadership & Communication: Proven leadership abilities with experience in managing and developing a team. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to clearly present financial information to various stakeholders.
  • Technical Proficiency: High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint), with advanced Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP) preferred.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to handle multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Independence & Influence: Ability to work independently, drive financial initiatives, and effectively influence cross-functional teams.
  • Teamwork & Independence: Ability to work both independently and as part of a team. Capable of supporting the Accounting Manager and collaborating with other departments effectively.
