This Feedstocks Analyst will conduct market research and analysis supporting Westlake's Olefins & Vinyl's businesses whose profitability is directly impacted by changes in these markets. The position will be responsible for the markets of natural gas, NGLs, power, salt/brine and other key raw materials and utilities that significantly affect Westlake's operating costs and profitability. A key objective will be to analyze market opportunities within these markets and to recommend strategies to reduce costs and optimize supply performance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provides market research and analytical support for the Manager-Natural Gas and the Director-Feedstocks.
  • Takes a lead role in the verification of complex monthly invoices and pricing formulas to ensure compliance with contract terms. Tracks and documents contract price escalation clauses and formulas with purchase order and invoice prices.
  • Provides market analysis and direct external consultants to develop forward power and raw materials process forecasts for monthly forecasts, annual budgets and long-range business plans.
  • Develops and maintains supply/demand and other analytical models for natural gas, NGLs, and power, sale and related strategic commodities as needed.
  • Requires in-depth understanding of the natural gas markets assessing the impacts of the interrelationship of different fuel sources have on regional natural gas markets.
  • Assists with the preparation of presentations on a monthly basis for the Strategic Feedstock Overview (SFU), the Feedstock Price Point of View (POV) and the Olefins Business Review meetings. Performs financial analysis in support of Westlake's Risk Management and Feedstock Trading activities.
  • Prepares periodic reports and presentations that analyze and benchmark performance against market indices, budget or peer companies. Assists in the development of the annual budgets and analyzes actual expenses via monthly/quarterly variance analysis.
  • Assists the Manager-Natural Gas with the development and implementation of corporate-wide natural gas consumption and reporting system capable of Real Time analyses and decision on buy vs. sell opportunities.
  • Acts as a key knowledge resource and expert to Westlake's Commercial Operations groups on the power and salt/brine markets.
  • Leads the development and ongoing management of system to monitor natural gas and other utility consumption at Westlake's various Fabricated Products Facilities with a goal of optimizing consumption relative to total production costs and make recommendation for further value-added changes.
  • Participates in supplier evaluations and interfaces with key industry market representatives and external consultants.
  • Serves as a back-up for the Manager-Natural Gas, including PO creation, invoice approvals and contract reviews, as necessary.
  • Special studies and other responsibilities (as needed):
  • Analyze and provide data for surveys, benchmarking, bankers, legal actions, etc.

  • Performs special projects and assignments as required by management.

  • Any additional responsibilities or tasks as assigned.

  • Comply with all Company policies and procedures.
  • Fully supports Company goals of continuous improvement and operational excellence at strategic and tactical levels including reviewing area of responsibility for improvement opportunities to initiate projects or communicate ideas to management as well as active participation on project teams.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting or Engineering discipline required, with an MBA strongly preferred.
  • Requires minimum 5 years of work experience in business management, manufacturing, engineering, finance/accounting, or related field. Experience in chemical or energy related businesses and industries preferred.
  • Natural Gas Scheduling and/or Gas Accounting experience preferred.
  • Incumbent must have strong inquisitive, analytical/modeling skills with some technical experience in the chemical, petroleum, or manufacturing business.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint and be able to develop accurate, detailed analyses under time pressure.
  • Must have effective verbal/written/presentation skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to touch, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as normally based in an office. Some of the work may be required in the operating units which can require usage of required PPE including safety glasses, hearing protection, etc. May also result in exposure to outside elements and may require usage of stairs and elevators. 10% travel including air travel or auto travel may occasionally be required.
