The

Advanced Process Controls (APC) Engineer

at Billings Refinery is responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring, and maintaining advanced controls systems to support refinery optimization.

This includes support of both regulatory controls and advanced control strategies.

The APC Engineer works closely with planners, operators, engineers, and technicians to optimize unit performance and meet business objectives on a daily basis.

Additional accountabilities include

loop tuning, personnel training, troubleshooting complex regulatory controls, Real Time Optimization, inferential development, and abnormal unit operation support.

Responsibilities May Include: Participates in and promotes all aspects of the refinery safety program. Demonstrates safety leadership and supports health of employees and contractors through personal engagement and sound decisions Capture economic benefits by identifying, developing, monitoring, and maintaining APC Communicates effectively with planning, operations, maintenance, process, and project engineering, vendors, contractors, etc. to address problems, coordinate work being performed Working closely with Operations, Process Engineering, and Planning Departments to realize control/optimization objectives through daily monitoring of APC/Optimizer performance Supports advanced controls including evaluation and development of APC applications, unit monitoring, calculation of inferred properties, model testing, and system maintenance Conduct regular reviews of applicable APC Key Performance Indicators (KPI), communicate the results to operations and process engineering along with any remediations required to maintain or improve APC performance Evaluates controls and instrument reliability issues in support of operations and maintenance teams. Recommends proper path forward, and/or implements solutions Assists with support of system networking and security by interfacing with Industrial Control System (ICS) and IT departments Provides support during process startups, shutdowns, and upsets as needed Participates in or leads refinery incident investigation teams for root cause analysis and/or corrective actions Trains and develops operators, technicians, and engineers on control systems operations and maintenance Provide modeling support for refinery gasoline blending. Develop and maintain models for additional efforts as required Support adopting and sharing APC best practices through internal and external networking Provide site support for APC and regulatory controls during off-hours with call out duties as needed Support of regulatory controls (DCS) as needed Develops and maintains documentation of controls, alarms, calculations, training, configuration, policies, procedures, etc Drives and/or participates in the MOC process including initiation, evaluation, PSSR, and post startup/closure actions

Required Qualifications: Legally authorized to work in the job posting country Valid Driver's License Bachelor's degree in Engineering 3 or more years of experience in a manufacturing and/or operating plant environment APC implementation and/or maintenance experience Knowledgeable in refinery process operations Willing and able to perform and comply with the following:

Travel up to 5% of the time Occasional on-call duties Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays Transport articles up to 50 pounds Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height Work around chemicals, including acids and bases Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat Work outside in harsh weather conditions Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection) Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering Possess a strong desire to learn, strengthen, and build skills, and keep up with APC technology, industry standards and codes Experience in refining process operations or process controls engineer Knowledgeable in DCS and other control systems regarding use, design, installation, and configuration Exposure to multivariable control and refinery wide optimization Experience with Honeywell Forge/Profit Suite and Emerson DeltaV Excellent planning, organization, and communication skills Ability to complete complex assignments in a timely manner Ability to meet schedules and costs with minimal supervision Ability to manage a large workload and changing priorities Strong leadership skills

The

Billings Refinery

is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
