YOUR IMPACT You'll be responsible for: Checking plans and making sure they are complete, code compliant and ready to go. Reviewing design and structural calculations and producing corrections. Collaborating together to identify and find solutions to challenges with plans and and applications of design. Reviewing work completed by outside consultants and vendors. Providing information to the public, City staff, contractors and developers regarding regulations, procedures and ordinances. Education and/or Experience: Any combination of education and experience that has provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for a Plans Examiner I/II, Senior Plans Examiner. A typical way of obtaining the required qualifications is to possess the equivalent of:

Plans Examiner I Graduation from an accredited college with a bachelor’s degree in Civil, Mechanical or Structural Engineering, Architecture, or a related field, or any combination of related training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

An example of this may include 4 years of related training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

Plans Examiner II In addition to the requirements of the Plans Examiner I, one year of increasingly responsible experience in building codes, structural design and/or structural plan checking, grading engineering and/or hydrology, or fire protection engineering or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities.

Senior Plans Examiner Associate degree with at least 3 years of experience in plan check design, construction, and inspection and ICC Plans Examiner Certification. Or an ICC Plans Examiner Certification and 5 years of experience in plan check design, construction, inspection, or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Plans Examiner I/II Knowledge of related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures, including accessibility requirements and California Energy Commission Standards of Title 24; principles and practices of structural and civil engineering; construction methods and materials. Knowledge of a specialty such as grading and hydrology or fire safety engineering may be required, depending on assignment. Ability to read and interpret plans, review plans and specifications on paper and electronically; interpret and apply related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; conduct field investigations; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Senior Plans Examiner Knowledge of building codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, including handicapped access requirements and California Energy Commission Standards of Title 24; principles and practices of structural and civil engineering; construction methods and materials. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and deal with potential confrontations; read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications; interpret and apply related laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; supervise subordinate staff and establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Special Requirements:

Plans Examiner I Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

Possession of a Plans Examiner Certificate issued by the ICC is desirable, or ability to be obtained by the end of probationary period.

Plans Examiner II Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil or structural engineer or architect in the State of California is desirable.

Possession of a Plans Examiner Certificate issued by the ICC.

Senior Plans Examiner Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a Plan Examiner Certificate issued by the ICC or ICBO is desirable.
