Dr. Joanna Chikwe is Chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where her primary clinical focus is robotic mitral valve repair. Dr. Chikwe serves as Chair of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Asymptomatic Degenerative Mitral Repair Writing Group, Vice-Chair of the American Heart Association Valvular Heart Disease Performance Measures Steering Group, and Vice-Chair of the American Heart Association Methodological Standards in Randomized Trials in Cardiac Surgery. Dr. Chikwe's research focuses on clinical trials (she is Co-PI of the NHLBI-sponsored CTSN pivotal randomized trial of surgical versus transcatheter mitral repair "PRIMARY") and comparative outcomes in cardiac surgery and cardiology, with publications in NEJM, JAMA, The Lancet and JACC.

This research scholar will be working on the DREAMCARE Project, Development of a Clinical Predictive Tool Based on Biomolecular Profiles in Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease, with Dr. Chikwe. The objective of this project is to develop a sensitive and specific biomolecular profile for ARF and RHD to improve early diagnosis and facilitate treatment.
The primary responsibilities of the scholar will include collecting and analyzing data, preparing abstracts and manuscripts for submission to conferences and academic journals, and assisting the clinical research team in the Department of Cardiac Surgery. The scholar will become acquainted with different research databases, both institutional and national clinical registries, as well as administrative claims datasets. They will also acquire proficiency in analytical software and perform analysis on large healthcare datasets. Collaboration with physicians, post-doctoral researchers and statisticians will be a crucial part of conducting research that has the potential to inform or influence clinical practices in the field of Cardiac Surgery.

This opportunity will offer the scholar firsthand and robust research experience by allowing her to develop unique research questions related to Acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease, socioeconomic disparities, and long-term mitral valve function and survival and encourage collaboration with physicians, medical staff, and post-doctoral researchers. The scholar will learn about the process of working with outside institutions with Dr. Chikwe's guidance. She would not be working with them directly but she will learn about the process.
The scholar will primarily be mentored by Dr. Chikwe and will also receive guidance from other surgeons, heart institute physicians/scientists and research team members. This will provide her with experience with different aspects of these research projects. Learning about data/sample collection, the process of sample/data analysis and translating that information for manuscripts of high-impact journals. The scholar will attend weekly research development meetings focused on creating abstracts for national meetings. She will have consistent meetings with Dr. Chikwe and the research team.
The scholar will develop their own research questions and complete chart reviews for the purpose of data analysis. Additional projects will also include de-identified data sources (such as United Network for Organ Sharing) that the Smidt Heart Institute has access to and the scholar will collaborate with the other post-doctoral researchers and medical staff on such projects. Day to day activities of the scholar will include: literature review, chart reviews, data analysis, statistical analysis of data, abstract preparation, preparation for presentations for national society meetings, and manuscript preparation and editing.
Month 1 - HR and Research required trainings
Month 2 - 3 - data collection/review and analysis
Month 4 - 6 - develop research questions from month 2-3 clinical outcome projects
Month 7 -9 - begin to prepare distinctive statistical patient cohort reports and prepare for AATS
Month 10-12 - Manuscript preparation and abstract presentation
Required Education & Experience
•Must be 18 years of age or older.
•Must have a HS Diploma or GED.
•Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.
•INTERNS: Those participating for academic credit must receive academic credit for the duration of the internship.
•VISITORS: Must be receiving funding from an eligible sponsoring institution (employer, educator, funder, etc.).
