Research Student Intern

SUMMARY

A research student intern will be expected to contribute to the design and development of highly technical and complex research experimentation protocols, mechanical test apparatuses, and measurement techniques and instrumentation, conduct experiments following complex protocols that have already been established, reduce and analyze data from laboratory experiments and from related studies, prepare presentation of the data and suggest interpretation. Duties will include assisting research team with the preparation of components used in molecular biology assays aimed at helping to characterize translational regenerative medicine approaches to the treatment of orthopaedic/musculoskeletal injuries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Contribute and work on collaborative research team efforts.
  • Reading and comprehending reports and other scientific literature; prepare summaries and reports from the literature
  • Maintain proper and comprehensive laboratory records, including notebooks and logbooks.
  • Conducting data analysis and computations.
  • Prepare and conduct complex laboratory experimentation setups according to established protocols
  • Preparation of samples and specimens for experimentation
  • Contribute to the design and development of highly technical and complex biomechanical research experimentation protocols
  • Record, analyze and maintain experimental data files and reports and materials for ongoing projects.
  • Presenting results especially those related to the line of work;
  • Writing research reports based on data results
  • Maintain good laboratory practices, including organization of tools and instrumentation and following general guidelines for safety and cleanliness
  • Participate in weekly laboratory meetings and appropriate available seminars.
  • Maintain all equipment in good working order.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Principal Investigator(s).
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS AND SUCCESS INDICATORS
  • Successful completion of experiments in the Laboratory
  • Timely completion of data reduction, analysis and statistical reports form laboratory experiments
  • Contributions to problem-solving, development and improvement of lab experimentation protocols, techniques and experimental designs.
  • Maintain laboratory records and notebooks as required by each experiment or study.
  • Produce proper technical reports and presentation materials.
  • Contribute to the writing of research reports, manuscripts and conference presentations and teaching materials.
  • Maintain current on all trainings, i.e., safety, workplace violence.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Regionally accredited Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or biomedical discipline.
  • Previous laboratory experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Relevant graduate study combined with experience may substitute for minimum experience or undergraduate studies in a non-engineering discipline.
  • A demonstrated interest in a Biomedical Engineering or orthopedics related career is essential.
  • Advanced knowledge of computers, excellent written and verbal communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills are required.
