Position Primary Purpose and General Duties:
The Health and Wellness Library Hourly Assistant provides support in providing consumer health information and programming services at the VCU Medical Center Health and Wellness Library. The Health and Wellness Library is a library for patients, their families, and the community to find health information. The Health and Wellness Library is dedicated to improving the health literacy skills of patients so they can make informed decisions about their health. The position reports directly to the Health and Wellness Librarian.

The work schedule will be twelve hours per week with the option to work either Wednesdays and Fridays
10:00am to 4:00pm or Thursdays and Fridays 10:00am to 4:00pm.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to:

•Provide excellent customer service to patients and their family members, community members, and healthcare providers seeking consumer health information at the Health and Wellness Library service desk.

•Answer questions about library resources, policies, directions, and general information. Refer reference questions to the librarian or library assistant.

•Give basic support to users for printing, faxing, scanning, and computing issues.

•Enter library interaction statistics accurately and consistently.

•Perform clerical functions in support of library collections, programs, or other projects.

•Monitor the library building and report facilities issues appropriately.

•Work with the librarian and library assistant to maintain a safe environment and report incidents as necessary.

•Provide support and assist with library programs, outreach activities, and promotion of library services and programs.

•Perform opening and/or closing procedures and secure the library at the end of each shift.

•Reports to the Health and Wellness Librarian.

Minimum Hiring Standards:
•Ability to work independently
•Ability to handle multiple requests at once while at a service point
•Punctuality, reliability, and good communication skills
•Basic computer skills and ability to learn new software/systems
•Ability to work well with diverse patient populations and backgrounds

Preferred Hiring Standards:
•Library work experience
•Experience in a hospital environment.
