Summary of Position:

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist performs testing in their assigned areas and is licensed to provide the following services; chemical, microscopic, microbiological, blood bank, hematological and serological test to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

Qualifications:

Education:

•Bachelors of Science Degree in Medical Technology or related field

Experience:

•Previous experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in a hospital or similar institution

•Sufficient computer skills as are required to complete an online application and the pre-employment/annual Net Learning requirements

•In compliance with patient safety standards, must be able to effectively communicate in English

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

•Responsible for the accurate examination and analysis of the testing they perform or oversee. This involves constant monitoring of quality control procedures, equipment maintenance, controlling specimen collection techniques and consultation with other laboratory staff.

•Is responsible for the routine operation equipment and instrumentation to include validating the performance of equipment through the use of control material, calibrators and performance verifiers.

•Reviews and is actively involved in quality control performance and corrective action.

•Assumes leadership responsibilities in the absence of the Laboratory Manager or Director of Laboratory Services

•Participates in departmental and hospital-wide committees and task forces, modeling excellence in communications.

Certifications/Licensure:

•California Clinical Laboratory Scientist License

•Must have one of the following Nevada licenses or must submit proof of application upon hire and obtain Nevada licensure within 6 months of start date:

o If less than 3 years CLS experience, must have the Nevada Medical Technologist license;

o If more than 3 years CLS experience, must have the Nevada General Supervisor license or National exam (ASCP or AMT).

Essential Functions:

1. Provides consistently exceptional care at all times.

2. Monitors and ensures accurate and timely test results in all areas of the laboratory.

3. Monitors calibrations on instrumentation.

4. Monitors Quality Control in area of laboratory assignments on a daily basis.

5. Monitors all instrument maintenance.

6. Consistently demonstrates knowledge of requirements, techniques and procedures to ensure accurate and timely delivery of laboratory services.

7. Accurately records all testing procedures in the blood transfusion department.

8. Supports the day to day operations of the laboratory to ensure accurate results and efficient workflow including monitoring of supplies

9. Determines priorities in workload and completes projects in an accurate and timely manner.

10. Provides supportive and compassionate leadership to laboratory staff when needed to ensure smooth operations.

11. Recognizes unusual conditions outside of his/her expertise and seeks guidance of coworkers or supervisors.

12. Orients, instructs and trains assigned personnel

13. Is responsive to requests for service and assistance. Follows through/meets commitments.

14. Keeps updated on laboratory policies and procedures

15.Participates in hospital & Medical Staff committees as assigned

16. The staff member is able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served. The individual demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to identify each patient's needs. All competencies are based on ages served

17. Demonstrates a working knowledge of regulatory and licensing standards and ensures that practice is compliant with standards

18. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
