The Board of Health for Madison and Dane County has a current vacancy for a full-time (1.0 FTE) Humane Officer.

The eligible list created from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies that occur within the next six (6) months.

**DEFINITION**
The work involves investigating and resolving animal complaints, impounding stray, injured, or sick animals and performing related field and office duties. This position is responsible for handling all types of calls according to Department policies and procedures related to animals. Work is performed independently, under the general supervision of the Animal Control Lead worker, and/or the Environmental Health Services Supervisor. This position assures the public health by following up bite cases and impounding animals that can potentially carry rabies or other diseases that can affect humans, capturing and impounding stray animals and following up on animal abuse situations, as well as many other types of animal cases.

**EXAMPLES OF DUTIES**
Capture and impound all types of stray animals, both in urban and rural settings. Respond to all animal calls and complaints of animal abuse and follow up as required by Department policies and procedures. Patrol for stray animals as time permits. Enforce all applicable City of Madison, Dane County; and State of Wisconsin laws and ordinances. Issue warnings, write citations, and appear in court as required. Manage and follow-up individual cases. Educate the public about local and State animal laws and proper animal care. Maintain records, write reports and use computers and two-way radios as required.
Respond to dispatched calls or citizen calls regarding animal bites, attacks or other exposure that could result in the transmission of rabies to humans. Investigate bite cases. Investigate and respond to situations in pet stores or other situations where animal diseases could potentially affect humans. Control and capture dangerous, injured or sick animals, including those possibly rabid.

**Education, Training and Experience**:
High School Diploma or equivalent. Two (2) years of professional experience in the handling, care, and/or control of diverse animals (including sick, injured, and potentially dangerous animals). Other relevant combinations of training and/or experience will also be considered.

**Certifications and Licenses**:
Applicant must attain the Certified Humane Officer credential in the State of Wisconsin within 12 months of hire. Applicant must pass the State Rabies Control Training Exam within 12 months of hire.

**Special Requirements**:
Must have a valid driver’s license or eligibility for, access to reliable personal transportation or equivalent and a good driving record. Availability 24 hours a day, seven days a week during public health emergencies. Must be able to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required. Possession of the physical requirements necessary to perform the functions of this position. Employees must receive and remain current with required immunizations and vaccinations per Public Health Policy. A list of requirements will be provided upon hire.
