Job Description
Department Description: The Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities serves as the hub for all community-focused initiatives at Lurie Children’s. The Magoon Institute is responsible for aligning the Medical Center’s clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with community engagement, while supporting people, programs and partnerships that advance community health. This team provides engagement opportunities for employees, physicians and trainees and leads the development and execution of Lurie Children’s Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy. The Magoon Institute partners with clinical, public health and community outreach leaders and experts across the Medical Center to work towards the goal of advancing health equity and racial justice, and improving health and wellness for children, adolescents and their families across Chicago.

Essential Job Functions:

- Student Program Assistant will work on a specific project independently or as part of a team; project details, timeline and deliverables will be determined in collaboration with supervisor based on department/program’s needs and student’s interests. Student will draft related learning objectives based on the specific project and student’s learning interests.
- Assist with administrative, communication and other operational activities in support of department/program’s goals and work plans; examples include data abstraction, collection, entry, and transcription, note taking and meetings minutes, event staffing, social media, copying/filing, etc.
- Attend virtual and in-person meetings and events at the hospital, offsite offices, and in the community as assigned to enrich student’s educational experience and support department/program’s goals.
- Attend regular one-on-one meetings with supervisor and report on project progress, challenges, and opportunities for learning.
- Complete community volunteer training and attend at least one community-based service opportunity event.
- Compile a final written summary of work completed during internship, including project progress and deliverables, meetings and events attended, and other relevant tasks completed.
- Compile a final written reflection on internship experience, including what was learned and how this will be applied to student’s academic/professional career; key observations and how they connect to the department/program’s and Lurie Children’s goals and mission; how the experience changed the student’s thinking, skills, interests, motivations, etc.; and next steps for the student, project, and/or department/program.
- Prepare and present summary/reflection at department/program staff meeting.
- Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

- High school diploma/GED required and current enrollment in college or graduate program.
- Previous participation in one of our Mentorship and Workforce Development programs is highly preferred.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particular Word, Excel, and Outlook required.
- Flexibility to work on evenings and weekends.
- Willingness to travel to different locations, neighborhoods, and communities through Chicago (via public transportation or personal vehicle).
- Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication, problem solving, organizational and time management, and attention to detail skills.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision but also as part of a team; and be adaptable in a frequently fast-paced environment.
- Ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines.
- Commitment to health equity, diversity and inclusion, racial justice, evidence-informed policy and practices, data-driven advocacy and community-driven processes.
