Established in 1863, scientists are elected to membership in the NAS for their outstanding contributions to research. The Senior Membership Associate coordinates key activities that ensure the successful nomination, election, and onboarding of new National Academy of Sciences members.

Job Summary:

Manages projects or functions specific to council, governance, and/or membership activities such as council and officer nominations, elections, and member services; bylaws, policies and procedures; meetings and records of the council and its committees; and annual meeting support. Develops related materials, provides advice on matters related to area of responsibility, and ensures successful management and execution of assigned projects and area of responsibility.

Applies specific and professional-level knowledge to perform responsibilities requiring the identification and analysis of complex factors to determine best course of action. Uses independent judgment and discretion but may receive guidance or expertise from supervisor or higher- level staff on more complex problems. Establishes processes and/or procedures to ensure the effective and efficient operation of assigned functions.

 

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

As part of the Membership elections team, the Senior Membership Associate:

  • Works with the Assistant Director, Elections to review submitted nominations, online ballot setups, and tabulations; provide demographic and other reporting; and coordinate special projects.

  • Coordinates the activities of nominating groups/committees, including responses to member inquiries; nomination review, tracking, and statistical reporting; online meeting scheduling, support, agenda preparation, and meeting notes; and website postings.

  • Coordinates the onboarding process for newly elected members, including coordination of online orientation sessions; contact and biographical information gathering; in-person session and event coordination at the Academy's annual meeting; and responding to general inquiries from new members.

  • Coordinates arrangements for virtual meetings of the Academy's disciplinary Sections.

  • As part of the membership team, works with colleagues on division-wide activities to help ensure the success of the Academy's annual meeting and other key membership activities.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
 

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Strong project coordination skills, responsiveness to deadlines, and attention to detail; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to work successfully in a team-focused environment with both coworkers and leaders in U.S. and international science.  

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge.  

Minimum Experience: Three years of related professional experience; membership or program experience in a science, technology, or medicine organization highly desirable.

Work Environment: Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 20-40%, with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
