The Director of Government Relations will work closely with CEO, external stakeholders, industry partners, and government officials to influence policy decisions and shape public opinion.

Government Relations:

  • Build and maintain relationships with government officials at the local, state, and national levels. Monitor legislative and regulatory activities and identify opportunities for engagement and advocacy. Promote ASA and the appraisal profession before federal agencies, and state legislatures and regulatory bodies.
  • Stay informed about relevant legislation and policy developments. Conduct analysis and research to understand the potential impact on the organization and develop policy positions and recommendations.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, coalitions, and partners to build alliances and mobilize support for advocacy initiatives. Engage with community groups, industry associations, and other stakeholders to align interests and amplify advocacy efforts.
  • Develop messaging, materials, and digital advocacy tools to effectively communicate the organization's priorities.
  • Represent the organization's interests in legislative and regulatory processes. Participate in industry working groups and provide expert input on policy proposals.
  • Ensure compliance with all lobbying laws and regulations. Maintain accurate records of lobbying activities and expenditures.
  • Monitor emerging issues and trends that may impact the organization's mission and goals. Conduct research and analysis to understand the implications and develop proactive strategies.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with elected officials, government agencies, and other stakeholders. Attend meetings, conferences, and events to build connections and advocate for the organization's interests.

Other Duties

  • In collaboration with CEO, identify and develop strategic partnership to support organization’s growth.
  • Identify and develop opportunities for new non-dues revenue.
  • Work with staff to develop plans to capture growth opportunities, including any needed changes to governing documents.
  • Staff liaison for ASA’s Real Property discipline committee.
  • May serve as representative for ASA at the Appraisal Foundation Advisory Council.
  • Collaborate with other Directors to shape ASA’s overall direction.
  • Work with peers to addressing organization-wide issues and providing relevant insights and opinions.
  • Develop, monitor, and control department budgets - review and approve all payables related to government relations.
  • Implement strategies for continuous quality control and improvement.
  • Ensure that all department processes, policies and procedures are documented.

Position Qualifications:

  • College degree required; Juris Doctor (with a concentration in legislative issues or financial services) preferred.
  • Five to seven (5-7) years progressive experience in associations, government relations or related fields .
  • Minimum two (2) years management experience, five (5) years experience preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong knowledge of government processes, legislative procedures, and policy development
  • Strong political instincts and ability to promote ASA’s position accurately and effectively on issues at the federal and state levels.
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful advocacy strategies.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including government officials, community organizations, and industry partners.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to analyze policy issues and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple projects and completing tasks in a timely manner.
  • Ability to handle discreet and confidential matters professionally.
  • Capable of fielding press inquiries and coordinating contact with appropriate member spokespersons.
  • Ability to work in a structured team environment.
  • Ability to professionally interact with outside stakeholders, members of Congress and other legislative personnel, volunteer leaders and ASA Staff at all levels.
  • Comfortable representing ASA and making occasional on-the-record statements.
  • MS 365 familiarity, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Teams.
